While researching various L brackets for the 5D Mark III, I came across the PromediaGear model PLC5D3:

One feature I really like is that the "L" part of the bracket can be removed (two set screws), leaving just the custom-fit bottom plate for those times you don't want the whole enchilada on your camera.

However, I am perplexed as to the purpose of the long silver rod (red arrow)?!?! It has a hex head, implying it can be unscrewed. But what purpose does it serve?

Anyone have any experience with PromediaGear products?

:)

Thanks!!

Now, to decide if I want to risk a blind-buy from a company I've never done business with before. The PromediaGear bottom plate looks like a better fit to the camera than RRS' design. I'd buy the Kirk L bracket but they've confirmed you can't put it on with a camera strap attached to strap lug on the left side of the camera. I don't leave the bracket on the camera when I'm not carrying a tripod and switching the camera strap from the camera lug to Kirk's lug would be too much fiddling.

The Kirk L bracket has it's own strap lug. It clamps to the camera strap lug and the clamping part has it's own lug. You can see it in this photo. I checked their 5DIII bracket and it's the same...

I've contemplated buying from ProMediaGear a few times. The reason their plate splits is because they have a modular system. If you have the L bracket for instance, you can remove the L part and attach the flash bracket. Oddly enough I've never seen anyone using their gear, but given the number of boutique companies out there I don't think that means anything.

The Kirk bracket would be a pain in the butt because I always have a neck strap on my camera and don't leave the Arca-Swiss bracket on the camera but about 5% of the time. I'd constantly have to be fiddling with moving the camera strap from one lug (camera's) to another (Kirk lug). Simply not a workable solution.

And the RRS L bracket leaves marks on the camera.

I'm really leaning toward giving the PromediaGear bracket a try.

I decided to order the PromediaGear L bracket. Hopefully it will be here by the end of the week. I'll report my thoughts once I've received it and tried it out.

Sorry to revive this thread, but Mark, any updates on the PMG bracket? I'm seriously considering one for my 5DIII. Also, what clamp do you use it with?

Mark,
I really wonder your impressions over PMG L-Bracket..
On B&H I have 3 options:
- PMG - $140
- Sunwayfoto - $100
- Kirk - $200

Kirk seems to be the best.. But does it worth..?

I don't have this bracket, but I do have the PMG bottom plate for a 1D3/1D4 (not the L bracket) and a coincidentally a bottom only plate from SunwayPhoto on my 5D3.

For the price the PMG is a well made, light weight and very form fitting bracket that fits the contours of the rounded 1D body perfectly.

It came with easily removable stops, as well as two allen wrenches, one for the stops, one for the main screw. The quality is very good.

Compared to RRS or Kirk? Well, it isn't in the same league. It will do exactly what those others do, and likely just as well, but the gloss black powder coat enamel is much less than the perfect anodizing you get from RRS, and looks like it will start to wear much sooner, however, after about 1 year mine is still wear free. So my gut could be wrong about that.

I have a Sunway plate on my 5D3 (again, not the "L")
I'd give it the same high marks as the Promedia for fit to body and usefulness. It too came packed with all allen wrenches required. It seems a little better built than the PMG, and has a more conventional matte black anodizing that still shows no signs of wear after about a year of use.

P.S., the guy that bought the one for 5D3 with grip was very unhappy;
