Mainly looking for indoor / dance floor shots taken with wide angle lenses or cool fisheye type shots.

I'm contemplating on getting a wide lens but not sure which one I should go for.. mainly to be used outdoors for wide couple shots and indoors for reception (with flash) / architecture type shots of churches / venues etc.

any suggestions? price isn't that big of an issue but i'd still like to purchase something bang for the buck.

I see we both like to use the wide angle the same way. Fun lens!

hey jim.. how do you think 17-40L be for my needs?.. i'l be using it indoors for reception with on camera and off camera flash.. as well as use it outdoors for landscape shots, and finally also use it for indoor church / building architecture shots on a tripod.

Do you use F/4 during receptions or you think its too slow?.. thats probably the only thing holding me back from getting that magnificent piece of glass.

Indeed!

I use my 16-35 for a lot of wide shots during a wedding, but I generally only use the 14 for dancing shots.

Personally I don't use f/4 much (except for formals where I shoot at f/5.6 or f/8). I tend to shoot around f/3.5 or lower for much of my work.

I've never owned the 17-40 but I hear its a fine piece of glass.

^ I've never shot with a fisheye before.. but always wondered this... see how that picture you posted has that fisheye effect.. is that exactly how it looks through the viewfinder? or does it look flat like a normal 15mm lens but once the picture has been taken only then you see the fisheye effect? (kinda silly question but just wondering).

I had three off camera lights set up around the room, firing into umbrellas or bounced off a wall. i don't recall my camera settings, I'd have to pull the exif data, but I'm guessing ISO was probably around 1600. Aperture was likely f/4.

Edit: Just checked. ISO was 1250 on the first photo and 2500 on the second. Shutter speed was 1/30 on both. Aperture did not read because LR doesn't recognize my 14mm lens, but it was likely f/4 as I rarely shoot wide open with this lens.

The reason the ISO was lower on the first image is because the subject was closer to one of my lights. When I moved to the other side of the room for the second shot, the subjects were farther from the lights, so I upped my ISO.

Thanks guys.. I think I might go with 17-40L for wide angle wedding shots.. I mostly use strobes & speedlites off camera indoors so F/4 shouldn't be a problem.. intact id probably prefer to shoot f/8-f/11 for wide angle stuff anyway to make sure i get everyone on the dance floor in focus and not have to worry about auto focusing.. just put it in manual focus at 17mm f/11 and almost everything should be in focus?
