I currently own a Canon 7D + 17-55IS and am very much thinking to switch to fullframe. Main reason is I do about 90% portrait shots, and would love a camera that does even better in lowlight than my 7D+EF-S.

So I'm either considering the 5DIII or the 6D. Would go for the kit with the 24-105 lens and see where to go from there (already have a 100L for portraits).

Anyone did this switch? Would you go for a 5DIII or 6D? Price difference is quite substantial but I don't switch bodies every two years either. So need something future proof too.

No way would I switch from 7D to a 6D. Smaller body, less focal points, etc. more of a down grade in many ways. Switching from a 7D to 5D Mark III would make sense if what you shoot now is going to be what you want to do only down the road. I know I will be adding a 5D Mark III in the future, best of both worlds as they say.

I haven't done it (yet) but from your need perspective, it really sounds like it's a no-brainer.
The High ISO sample images so far look even better than the 5DmkIII's. That's pretty impressive.

The 6D - 24-105L price is very good and is definitively the way to go.

Good luck with your decision.

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

I have to add that I almost never use continuous focus on my 7D, let alone all the focus points. I'm so used to the center AF and recomposing, that I really wonder if I need a more expansive AF system. Although I have to admit that when trying out the 5DIII at the store, I was very impressed by it.

I just sold my gripped 7D today and I'm trying to decide if the 6D or 5DIII would fit my needs the best. I still have a 1DIII and I always liked the files from the 1D vs. the 7D. So I could keep the 1D and pick up a 6D or sell the 1D (and 10-22mm EF-S) and just have the 5DIII as my only body.

if 90% of your photos are portraits then switching to a 5DII or III or 6D certainly makes a lot of sense

It depends on whether you want all aspects of the camera to be an "upgrade", or whether you want some aspects being a step back, and some being a step forward. The 6D is a lower grade camera with a better sensor. The 5D3 is a higher great camera in all regards. There is also the 5D2 to consider... which similar to the 6D in that some thing swill be downgrade, and some upgrade... but the specifics are different. Only you can decide what features are "worth it" to you, and which are not.

I went from the 7d to the 6D.. Was happily using my 7D but interested in going full frame. I rarely used the 7D's autofocus system to capacity so figured I'd venture towards either the 5DII or the 6D. Better ISO, smaller body, and built-in wifi were the key points that swayed me from the 5DII towards the 6D. I've only had it for a little over 24 hours but at this early point I'd say I made the best choice for me.

I sold the 7D and shed all of my EF-S lenses along the way to help fund the 6D so am now sitting with just two primes. I'm trying to be patient to see how some of the real world results pan out with the new EF 24-70/4.0IS lens. Hopefully it comes out soon as I'd like a little more flexibility in regards to composing my shots through the holidays than my primes can afford. I know that you can't go wrong with version I or II of the 24-70/2.8 but having IS is more important to me for the instances when my wife wants to pick up my camera and just happily snap away in auto.

I've been trying to sell my 7D+17-55 for a few days now, but it seems not that many people are interested by it. I have to say I still love the sturdiness of my 7D so I'm a bit worried a lighter/less firm body will appeal to me. The 5DIII is a lot of money though. In the ideal world, I'd keep my 7D but to be honest, that's not an option since I need the funds to pay for the new body.

I agree, it seems your targets are simple enough so you don't really get any advantage of the AF in a camera like the 7D or 1D Mark IV or...

You state you almost always use the center point and recompose. My main reason for getting my 7D is sports/action, where you track focus and thus can't recompose, but have to rely on whichever AF point covers your target while it's moving to solve the task of taking photos of it.
That's a different deal. The 6D would be less suited for that.

be patient, i t took me almost two months to sell my gear (60D, canon 10-22 and Tamron 28-75) mainly becuase i refused to give it away and stuck with my asking prices. advertise here and on other forums like red Miranda and there is always Ebay if you have to move an item and can sacrifice profit.

on thing i learned is that the front page turns over quickly, i wasn't aware of the no re-post in 45 rule here so i closed and re-listed one of the lenses and i had. i got my hand slapped by the mods but i also got new hits and sold a lens. :) so its also a matter of who sees your post when it gets posted, its like fishing.

btw, i moved from a 60D to a 5d2, i know the 7D is more advanced but IQ its the same and the difference is worth what you'd be giving up in your case.

As you say:

1. You shoot 90% portraiture
2. You shoot center point and recompose
3. You want better low-light performance

Nothing about the 5D3 will do those three things better than the 6D.

It sounds like the 6D is absolutely perfect for your needs.

It has:

1. Full frame
2. the most sensitive center AF point in the Canon line at -3EV
3. better low-light performance than the 5D3 and the 5D2

As for the feel of the body, it's all metal except for the plastic top plate. All the parts you actually touch are metal. It'll feel perfectly sturdy.

//and it's not like engineering plastic feels cheap - ask any 60D owner, most of us think the 60D feels solid.

For portraits? 6D for sure. I went from 7D to 5Dc, and now 6D (because I missed filming ability from 7D, and because I like WiFi and GPS on the 6D). You could also get a 5Dc cheap and see how you like FF. The 5Dc is a steal at current prices and produces excellent image files.

Would there be any reason to take a 5DMarkIII over the 6D? I don't want to feel limited in any way. If I'm spending that much money, a couple euro more (well, a couple hundred) won't make that much a difference.
