APO Macro is the "old" better version
APO Macro DG is the "new" better version
non-APO is not really worth the (small) difference in cost if you are talking about the various 70-300 lenses.

FWIW - The DG versions are shaping up to be not much more than hype and a price hike (the coating hasn't been shown to do much of anything).

Here is a link to acronyms related to lens manufacturers:

http://www.camerahacker.com …anufacturer_Acronyms.html (external link)

Macro stands for MAcroPhothgraphy

APO (not an acronym, it just is shorthand for apochromatic, meaning non color fringed)

From Sigma, the best lens are the ones that have as much of these acronyms EX DG Macro HSM APO.........

For example, I just recently bought the Sigma APO MACRO 150mm F2.8 EX DG HSM

This set of opinions may or may not relate to reality.

I owned the Sigma 70-300mm APO Macro DG recently and think it's one of the best consumer lenses out there. In terms of sharpness and colour it wasn't far off from my 70-200mm f4 IMO. the cons to me were the zoom creep and the noisy motor, but still bearable. It was a little soft at 300mm but for the price it's a pretty decent lens.

I'd love to believe it does something, especially since procrastination on my part has left me without the non-DG 70-200. It was $100 cheaper at sigma4less while they carried both, now its DG or look to the used market.

But the opinions I have read (here & FM & DPR) all seem to back up my assertion.

There may be some instances where the DG coating makes a difference, but so far nobody has posted an example of such.
