Not necessarily true, there has been at least one case where Canon has refused repair, even at the owner's expense, posted here on the boards. Of course, the first telltale sign was the mismatched serial numbers that led to the discovery that the camera was grey market, but Canon seems to have gotten more strict over the past year or so anyways, so I would not assume anything.

I was always under the impression that, if you pay their asking price, that Canon will fix/repair/sell whatever you want done. Apparently, that has changed. I guess that is why I never bought grey market.

Well yes that particular case was refused, but that was because it had mismatched serial numbers, in other words there was fraud/illegal activity involved, not because it was grey market. If there were mismatched serial numbers on a camera from an authorized retailer, I'm pretty certain they'd also refuse service on the same grounds since the whole point behind their refusal is counterfeiting of serials which could indicate black market activity, not grey market.

Of course I'm just speculating. All I do know for sure is that my grey market lens is currently being serviced at Canon, no problems whatsoever. I just don't have warranty on it.

But they will. They just won't give you warranty service. And usually electronics either go wrong within the first few days (within return period) or after a long while (out of warranty anyway).

These cameras have a rather large mechanical content. I had a shutter button fail on my 40D after quite a few cycles. I hear about failed shutters as well, but haven't experience one.

But was that fail within the 1 year warranty period?

That's not correct-they won't fix under waranty but they will still fix. What, so everyone who has ever been on a holiday and bought a camera is black baned from service? Lol I don't think so...

Your post makes me wonder how much better (or not) the 5d III is over the 7D, which I think has very good AF.

Not sure about 7d but I did some side by side testing with my old 1dmk2 and 5dmk3 beat it really good. This using 300mm f2.8 IS lens.

Not in the cases posted if you would take the time to actually read. Ultimately canon will run the serial and decide what they want to do. I am quite sure it is not a 100% guarantee that canon will repair a grey market EVEN if you are willing to pay.

I have already read them and they are exceptional cases where the serial numbers had been changed, this has nothing to do with canon refusing due grey market?

I think for me the best feature is the orientation locked AF points, especially combined with the secondary AF point you can set. I love how wehn i turn the camera to portrait orientation i can have the AF point automatically jump to a higher AF point, perfect for portraits ec.
Second would be silent AF which i actually use most of the time.

Coming from a 60D and never really liking a mates 5DMKII im over the moon with mine and am still finding little features that make me smile.

This is exactly what I have been saying.

However, TeamSpeed is right in that we can't be 100% sure that Canon will always repair if you give money, simply because they don't have an official statement on that particular topic.

Canon have stated that they will repair grey imports, at cost.

For those who haven't seen the serial number thread, a few of the cameras turned up with fake labels, that had serial numbers that did not match the Exif.
Canon refused to deal with these cameras, but did state it was only because of the fake label and serial number, not the fact that they were grey imports.

Let's just leave it at "the odds are good that should you need a repair and want Canon to do it, but you bought gray market, then you can pay them to do the repair". Let's not go so far as all grey market goods will 100% be worked on by Canon for a fee, because we can find cases, regardless of situation, where this was not the case. Can we end that part of the debate?
