Recently upgraded from a T1i to a 60D and sold it with both of my kit lenses (18-55 and 55-250) and now looking to add a new lens to go with my 60D. Majority of my photos are of drag racing and I do get track side access at the local tracks. While I know I could use both lenses its only in the budget to get one right now and just wanted to see what fellow motorsport photographer would suggest? I did use the 8-15 at a race last yr and loved it but with me currently only owning a 40mm 2.8, 85 1.8, and 70-200 f4L is, would you rather have uwa or a f2.8 zoom like the 17-55 for night photos?

Personally, I would go with the 17-55 - IQ is great, the 2.8 is nice and has IS, though the uwa/8-15 would produce some interesting shots. I've got it paired with a 7D when I'm close enough to the action

A 3rd option also being to go with a 10-22 and 15-85 as both combined are priced between the 8-15 and 17-55 and this would give me a uwa and general purpose lens and continue to use my primes for night photos.

I wasn't a huge fan of the 15-85. I did play with it for a few hours before going with the 17-55. I didn't really need the extra range on the crop and didn't like the variable f-stop. I do have a 24-105L to cover the range but for the most part in night shots lately, I've been using the 17-55.

I would prefer to have the 17-55...the 8-15 would be cool in the pits/paddock but for your action work, probably not so much.

Decided I'm going to order a 10-22 on Friday, Then after the holidays are over, I'll start saving for a 17-55 to have before the start of racing season.

The 10-22 is fun at the track, but tou need to be pretty close to the action.

Ended up grading the 10-22 from canon as a refurb for 20% off and received my Christmas bonus today at work and it was larger then I expected it to be so, Looks like I'll be ordering the 17-55 beginning of next week and should have both the 10-22 and 17-55 here for Christmas!
