If I'm editing RAW files in LR and then want to Publish them to a service like Smugmug do I need to Export to an sRGB jpeg first then Publish, or do I just drag the RAW files into the publish folder?

It appears that when you drag RAWs to the Publish folder that all of the settings currently set for an Export (like image format and color space) are also applied. Is this correct or am I missing something?

No need to export first.

Thanks René.

For Smugmug they only have the settings shown below ... with none specifying color space. Maybe they only allow publish as sRGB so don't give the option?

Solved:

Quote from the guy that wrote the Smugmug plugin ( http://news.smugmug.com …/lightroom-3-and-smugmug/ (external link) ):

"We omitted the ColorSpace setting from the UI and default it to sRGB. SmugMug converts all images to sRGB, so it seemed silly to give users the option to select something else, considering that converting from another colorspace to sRGB adds additional processing time on our end."

I like their reasoning :)

So far I'm really liking the switch from ACR/Bridge to LR. I've been using it as an excuse to update to Adobe's latest processing engine (2012) which has also allowed me to get rid of a ton of "intermediate" files that were filling my system.

Here was my original Smugmug workflow:

ACR -> 16 bit ProPhoto Tif (that I kept in folders) -> Small edit's in PS plus sharpening -> convert to sRGB jpeg (that I kept in another set of folders) -> upload to Smugmug

Now for Smugmug it's:

LR -> drag edited RAW to Publish folder -> publish to Smugmug

Now I'll only create Tif's when I need to do any editing in PS.

The only thing I've noticed is that you really need to be careful not to accidentally delete a bunch of files. You can restore then, but you lose all your edits :( I went to delete a single file one time but had about 20 highlighted ... lesson learned.

Glad to know it's working for you!

One great LR feature you can explore is Virtual Copies. You can create several "versions" of a single image without creating file copies. You can use VCs in collections as well, so, for example, a VC for SmugMug, a VC "original", a VC for printing, etc.

Heh! Lesson learned!

Yeah, if you delete an image from the Library (not the disk) you through away all your edits/metadata. At least you still have the original on the disk, although you definitely want to use the appropriate "caution" when Deleting from the disk!

Thanks Tony, I'll check out virtual copies.

Not sure if I should have but after losing my edits the one time I also turned on "Automatically write changes into XMP".

There's nothing "wrong" with that, since the edits/metadata do show up in LR and also can be "shared" with either another installation of LR or with Photoshop ACR, or copied onto an external hard drive and shared with, say, a laptop, nice feature!

The "downside" actually goes back to the "old days" of LR1 -- LR used this as the "default" and we would see significant slowdowns, since every little change got written into a file. It should be noted, though, that computer systems have speeded up since '07 and these days a lot of folks are happy doing the once-default "write to XMP".

However, I believe that if you Delete either from the Library or from the disk, your xmp metadata will also disappear...?

Thanks again Tony.

When I get a chance I'll do a test.
