Today I visited Pat Garrett's Murder Site. In case you do not know, Pat Garrett is the man who killed Billy the Kid.

Garrett was killed years later just east of Las Cruces, NM. In February of 1908, he was traveling down an arroyo, which was then used as a road from Organ to Las Cruces, when he was murdered during a dispute. A family member erected this to show the place where he was gunned down.

It is now along side a road which runs under power lines. Recently the city of Las Cruces has wanted to annex the land, but is coming under fire because of the potential for the site to be compromised. Most of the time, building does not occur in natural arroyos, do to flood risk, so I doubt the spot would be touched.

That's pretty cool. Looks like something was stolen from those vertical posts?

Yeah, I am not sure what is up with that. It definitely looks like something was taken.

Neat pics and good history lessoN. I lived in Las Cruces for a couple years and knew about Billy the Kid being in Mesilla, but never knew about Pat Garret being killed in Las Cruces. If you get a chance, post up some pics of the Organ Mountains. I have a bunch and think those are some gorgeous mountains.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming....."WOW, WHAT A RIDE".

Nice pics and history, I was in that area a few months ago and was unaware of this part of our history, thanks for sharing.

Jay Bird, I've got a picture of the Organs hanging on my wall that was taken from Baylor Pass in almost the same position as the one you posted. Yours looks great in B&W.

I have been wanting to go there. Next time I go to Tucson, I need to stop at Tombstone.
