I was on Loop Road this week in the Big Cypress Swamp in SW Florida.
The weather was a little cool and there were a lot of alligators on the side of the road.

Here is a little sample of what I saw

All taken with 7D and new 70-300L

At the bottom of the pile is the biggest one I saw about 9 feet I think

Those are some Big Fine Teeth there. How close were you?! These are great photos, but I'm not sure I'd be able to get such closeups even at the 300mm side. :D The 9 footer would have given me pause, assuming the "smaller" ones hadn't already.

Mathogre they were about 5 foot away, I was in my car mostly, but some outside. I was taking a photo of one below me under a culvert and he whipped his tail and went under the culvert and I realized had he decided to make that a jump I would have been a little too close.
These alligators are used to cars for the most part so unless someone is speeding past, they don't move much.

That's not too bad then. Yeah, there's a big difference if you have the shell of a car between you and alligators (or anything that could see you as lunch).

They are great photos, definitely!

Really, I am a little amazed. My normal lens for something this close would be my 70-200 f4 IS.
I actually think this is sharper and gives that extra reach. When it isn't zoomed out it is much more compact, so it will be easier to toss in a backpack.

Great shots, been thinking of making a run down loop road soon. but 1st i want to check out the
abandon rocket factory west of Florida city, there are alligators and an old rocket still in a silo out there. but its way out there 6 mile walk from the main road.
