one without either (perhaps for less $).

It would cost more. Video and an AA filter add virtually nothing to the cost of a camera. Removing them would result in much smaller sales volumes, leading to higher prices.

If you don't like video, don't use it.

Hollis, thanks for the reply. It is not about liking, it is about need. I would never use the video. However, the AA filter is there for both stills and video, and, with 24 MP, I don't think it is required, for still photography with most telephoto lenses. I may be wrong, I was hoping someone would correct me, if I am. I am surprised that AA filters add "virtually nothing" to the cost of the sensor, I would have guessed otherwise. I have seen the opinion elsewhere, that video capability adds no cost. I can see how that might be true.

It seems to me that having two different models would add to sales volume. Whether the two models cost the same or different isn't that important to me. The presence of the AA filter, which is required for video, on a sports/birding/wildlife camera, is the issue for me. I was wondering if Canon Marketing might be thinking of two models. I take it that your opinion is "no way". You are probably correct. Wishful thinking on my part.

there's probably a demand for models without the AA filter but apparently Canon doesn't think it's large enough

I would imagine that the huge number of support calls from users complaining about strange coloured lines all over their images may also be a factor.

Nikon made two models of the D800. The D800E, without the AA filter, costs about $200 more

You sure? A quick poke around google indicates it is filterless.

I think he meant D800 vs. D800E.
The D800 has AA, the E does not.

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

But it would be user removable so presumably the people removing the AA filter would know the consequences

There will be a mass of users who will read on the Interwebs about how removing the AA filter will make their pictures sharper. And the majority will stop reading there and remove the filter.

You are probably correct in your assertion that many of those who would remove the filter would not truly understand the full implications.

But, so what?

Those that would make an informed choice would have the choice.

"Pro" level camera designers should assume a certain expertise on the part of the customers rather than assume the customers need to be protected from their ignorance.

the D800E does have an AA (or low pass filter). DPReview regurgitated the Nikon press blurb in their review of the fraternal twins

Interesting, but the bottom line is that it has no AA. Though the parts may be there, the spreading of the light is not done.

You mean the 7DII shouldn't have a "like" and "instagram" button? :D
