I have a question on the counter in the 5D MK2 and MK3. A couple of weeks ago I bought a 5D3 off craigslist at a very good price. I checked eosinfo for the counts on the 5D3 and my current 5D2 and the 5D3 showed 1736 and my 5D2 showed 9716. Well I decided to sell the 5D3 due to never buy on impulse and it being Christmas, but when I met the buyer and inserted his card it showed over 8500 shots and he said the camera keeps track of clicks no matter what card is inserted even after formatting. We used his cf and then I put in a one week old shdc and the counts were the same execpt one higher than the cf card.. Was eosinfo wrong?

The shutter count was probably correct. But it's not related to the file numbering. File numbers can be changed as you like.

I also think, but can't say for certain, that if his card had been formatted in a Canon DSLR product and then a file was placed on it with the proper naming, say IMG_8499.CR2 or IMG-8499.jpg, then the next image in your camera would be IMG_8500.CR2 or IMG-8500.jpg.

That is correct. One of the reasons why there is no relation between shutter counts and file numbers.

Hi All, I have a question about file numbering. I have a Canon 5D3 and a 7D2, both are well over 10,000 shots. I have the file numbering set to start with IMG_... and to add the count. All my images now start with the name IMG_999_... . Is there any way to get rid of the "999" part? I do not need it anyway I format the cards before each use. I tried to reset the numbering manually but that did not have any impact.

If you reset the numbering it goes back to IMG_0001, unles you already have files on the card in the camera, of course.

I formatted the cards, reset the numbering and still get images with names like IMG_9999_1, IMG_9999_2... I cannot get rid of the 9999 part.

A question. I don't have either camera, but the manuals for both (and the 5Dsr, newer than the 5DIII) all say the same thing:
'The file name has 4 alphnumeric characters followed by a a 4-digit image number [a total of 8 characters] and extension'.

Your examples are 10 characters, like 'IMG_9999_1', plus, I assume, the extension (JPG or CR2). This makes me think you're talking about the file names after transfer to a computer.
Do you use a program other than a normal file browser or so to transfer files from the card to your computer?
If so, does that program rename the files as they are transferred?

I use EOS Utility to download and now I checked the settings. For some reason I had the setting to start numbering from 9999, it started when I first imported files from the 5D3. I changed the settings now, so I think now it is going to be OK. Thanks for the hint.

That will most certainly solve the issue. You didn't tell about the IMG_999_1 etc. in your first question. Only IMG_999... Hence my answer wasn't relevant, since you info wasn't either.

Excuse me? This is what I wrote in my first post: "All my images now start with the name IMG_999_..." . I did tell about this, I think.

Here you did, but not to begin with. It doesn't matter now, the problem is solved. I mentioned it just to point out how difficult it is to give correct answers when you don't know every detail.
