Av Mode stuck on 1/200 shutter?

Hey guys, just recently, my 5D II has been acting up in Av mode. When in Av, the shutter is stuck at 1/200 when a flash is attached (tried switching between 580 and 430 ex with no difference). When I take the flash off, or turn it off, then that's when the shutter speed changes appropriately. ISO is set to 100 or whatever value. When I change the aperture, shutter doesn't change to compensate for exposure.

All other modes work perfectly fine, Tv, manual. I know it's not the flash since I tried different ones. Attempted to clear all camera user settings with no luck.

Anybody know what's going on?

It is limiting you to synch speed so you don't use too fast a shutter for the flash.

Agreed. if you need a higher shutter speed, you need to use HSS on your flash... also note your camera exposes for ambient and uses flash for fill when in AV mode...

I've never even seen a 5DII, but on my 40D one of the custom settings is to force a 1/250 synch speed when set in Av -- could the 5DII have a similar custom setting? I have it selected on my 40D and when I put it in Av it is synched at 1/250 when using my 430ex II -- if I turn off that menu choice it will synch as normal in Av (trying to properly expose the dark background). Is there something like that on the 5DII

Yep. C.Fn I -7. But I think that should have defaulted to auto when the custom functions were cleared. Unless he cleared 'Camera user settings' which only clears C1, C2, etc.

Just because we can afford some nice equipment doesn't mean we know how toy use it all the time. Its easy done.

Cut the guy slack, im sure you don't know everything about all the gear you own.

I don't imagine it's too difficult. I could decide to become a DJ tomorrow and go buy $2,000 worth of DJ-stuff and not have the first clue what I was doing. Some people buy first, then learn. Nothing wrong with that.

Because his issue is that the SS changes fine in M and Tv modes, so it's not automatically obvious what this issue is - at least that's my interpretation.

But as other have mentioned there are various options for setting what the camera does in Av with the flash on.

BINGO. I only cleared user settings which only cleared C1, C1... didn't do anything. cleared the C.Fn settings and works perfectly fine now.

Sorry didn't give more details everyone. Yes I know what HSS is. I've never really messed around with the C. Fn settings which I should take a look at now. :P

Honestly, I've met some guys with top of the line gear, like 5D3's, all L lens, etc and don't know the basic triangle of light exposure. However, money's not a problem for them at the time and they know they want to get into photography. If I had the money, I would definitely skip all the basic stuff and go straight to the best gear and learn from there. I make good money as I'm an engineer at a good company. Money's seriously not a problem... it's my gf that limits me. :P

Thanks BrandonSi for understanding. Explained it perfectly

I have not used the 430EXII, but you should also be able to set the flash in high sync speed mode.
