I currently have a printed 11 x 17 portfolio which currently contains 20 images. However, for the 2013 season I will be updating the images in the portfolio, out of the 20, 11 will be replaced with new updated work or maybe even all of them.

How many images is too much? I have lots of close up detail shots, but I dont want to sacrifice the full shoot shots for these. I was thinking of having the 20 of my best along with another 10 or even 20 of the close up detail shots.

Is a total of 30 or 40 images too much, or am I over thinking it

I am an automotive photographer for those who wonder what I shoot ;)

How many shots do you have that will knock the viewer on their ass?

That's how many you put.

Well put. Thats definitely my #1 priority, but I want to be through in what I can offer as well.

Thomas is obviously onto something there :)

I'd collect your ass-knocking photos together, then reduce by removing shots that are basically the same. Each shot should show something new about your ability--not just new in terms of, well, different cars.

Also consider this: show not only what you have done, but also what you want to do. If you have a particular style / vision, make that evident by your choice of shots.

I'd say 40 max.
