Heya guys,

Quick question, someone ask me to supply him a high res portrait photo of his wedding that i did a while ago. He wants to print it on a 700 x 500mm canvas.

Now, what file resolution and how many pixel should i supply him with?

Thanks

Is there any reason why you can't just give him the full-res file out of your camera? I mean, is it imperative that you resize it?

I'd agree with Damien, give him the full rez file, but realize that a particular print size will typically require cropping to the aspect ratio of the print. A 500mm x700mm print, to fill the frame, would require cropping to a 5:7 aspect ratio. You could be best served by doing the crop yourself and then sending/exporting a high-quality jpeg of the crop to him to print.

From the research that I've done, the online canvas print suppliers recommend 100-150dpi is plenty for canvas. You're not printing on slick glossy magazine paper so you don't need 300dpi.

Quick math says 700x500mm is about 30x21 inches, multiply by 150dpi and you're looking at 4500x3150 pixels. Or, since nobody's looking at a canvas that size form six inches away, you could even get away with 100dpi, or 3000x2100 pixels.

Approximately.
