Hopefully this post is in the right section

Does any one here use MS Publisher by any chance?

I would like some advice as to the best image file type to use, without undue degradation, to be imported in to MS Publisher to then go off to the printers.

Is jpeg at 300dpi good enough, or should I save the image file in PS6 as some other format that MS Publisher can better use?

Thanks in advance for your help

honest opinion? do not use publisher its not meant as a ''professional'' print program.

you have PS6? you can export them as .jpg at the size you want them just make sure down-sampling and any compression is switched off.

as for the DPI ask the printers what DPI they print at, 300dpi is more than ample but if they have 1200dpi printer then you may as well at minimum save it around 600dpi (i'd send them a full whack of 1200dpi though if it was me, just cos' i could doesn't make a tremendous difference by any means but i just would...)

the other method is to save them as PDF's they work just as well, i personally prefer PDF's as i work in a printers it's 100x easier and quicker to use PDF's the main reason is the colour/spotcolur etc etc image information is saved in full and stored (Cannot be changed) and the size can be viewed quicker, not only that but the printer(as in human being) can add crop marks etc if required for more accurate finishing.

also we can from PDF's extract every single piece of colour information, so if we have a discrepancy we can match the colour profiles to the printer profiles in a bid to improve the printed image.

after saying that is this a local printer your using or is it a specific photographic printer? if its photographic i would supply .Jpg if it is a local printer i would ask which they prefer and whats the best colour set-up to use (some printers will say RGB some will say CMYK some will say use USSWAPCOAT profile) etc etc this tbh shouldn't matter with a photographic image but if they print something at it looks completely wrong mention and ask if they used the photographic profile.

Thanks for the very detailed reply, it's much appreciated.

I will do a bit of digging and tell the guy I'm sending the jpeg to, who uses Publisher to have a footy program printed, to ask the right questions of the printers

Most professional printer will ask for PDF rather than a Publisher .pub file for printing. They will also usually want it in CMYK. When you convert the Publisher color space from its default RGB to CMYK, some of the color controls function differently, particularly where color gradients are used.

Also, I am not sure about this, someone may wish to comment, but I do not think that Publisher is a color-managed workspace, other than the standard Windows Color Management.
