I have heard alot about nearly every L lens Canon produce but have no come accross the 28-300 L 4.5-5.6 ever. I am not going to go buy one or anything but I wonder why this lens never crops up? Does no one use it despite is general purpose coverage?

Well, it's sort of like the 'jack of all trades, master of none' axiom. It does a very good job as a large range superzoom (from what I've heard and seen, I've never used one), but in most situations the image quality will not be equal to shots coming from smaller range zooms. Add to that the fact that it's pretty heavy, and a lot of people don't want to carry something like that for everyday use. However, if you have situations where you quickly need to go from wide to medium tele, it's a good bet. A lot of people who need this capability carry two camera bodies with different lenes to get the coverage, which may be one reason you don't see this more often.

I'm guessing your 350D would look a little lost hanging off one of those!

I was thinking about purchasing one of these to replace my 28-105 and 75-300 as it covered both of these ranges and has L optics. I went into Jessops here in the UK and had a play around with it and decided to vote against it. I hate push / pull zooms + image quality was not as good as I expected it to be. Saying that you are asking a hell of alot from a 28-300 lense. I would rather stick to separate lenses and not compromise on quality.

Hope that helps.

Thanks - Sunny.

Jessops had one? That's a surprise!

Funny enough it was the only L lense that had in stock. I went to buy a manfrotto tripod and whilst waiting for my wife to meet me in the shop I asked the salesmen if he had any L series lenses in stock. Think they quoted £1500 odd pounds. Soon after it had been struck off my 'self x-mas present list'.

this lens would, if it was good enough, be seen at every red carpet event that the press cover, as they would get the 3 shots the editors need - head and shoulders. 3/4 and full length. the problem is it's just not sharp enough, especially when zoomed fully. It's an 11x zoom at the end of the day. The result is 2 bodies with either a 16-35, or a 24-70 on one body, and the 70-200 2.8 on the other
