I have heard alot about nearly every L lens Canon produce but have no come accross the 28-300 L 4.5-5.6 ever. I am not going to go buy one or anything but I wonder why this lens never crops up? Does no one use it despite is general purpose coverage?

It does a very good job as a large range superzoom (from what I've heard and seen, I've never used one), but in most situations the image quality will not be equal to shots coming from smaller range zooms. Add to that the fact that it's pretty heavy, and a lot of people don't want to carry something like that for everyday use. However, if you have situations where you quickly need to go from wide to medium tele, it's a good bet. A lot of people who need this capability carry two camera bodies with different lenes to get the coverage, which may be one reason you don't see this more often. I went into Jessops here in the UK and had a play around with it and decided to vote against it. I hate push / pull zooms + image quality was not as good as I expected it to be. Saying that you are asking a hell of alot from a 28-300 lense. I would rather stick to separate lenses and not compromise on quality. I went to buy a manfrotto tripod and whilst waiting for my wife to meet me in the shop I asked the salesmen if he had any L series lenses in stock. Think they quoted £1500 odd pounds. Soon after it had been struck off my 'self x-mas present list'. EOS-5D with grip, 300D with grip, EF 50 f1.8, EF 28-135 USMII IS, EF 75-300 USMII IS & 550EX.

It's an 11x zoom at the end of the day. The result is 2 bodies with either a 16-35, or a 24-70 on one body, and the 70-200 2.8 on the other www.ultimate-images.co.uk
