Hi all. Hope everyone is well. I know this is similar to other threads on this forum but wanted to get a definitive answer. I shoot with a 300 mm F4, which I love. I constantly use it with an original 1.4 I bought used and cheap. I am happy with the combo but as other people do,I wonder if I could possibly get sharper images if I bought a new 1.4 mk III. The reason I want to know peoples opinions is because they are not cheap and would like some advice before I make the leap. The extender I have performs well but it was fairly old when I bought it. I am mainly concerned with I.Q rather than speed. Thanks alot. Bye

I have read the 1.4x III is not really any significant change IQ wise and not worth the price. The 2x III though is worth the upcharge.

I plan to upgrade to the 1.4x III from my II, but only when I can snag a Canon refurb with a 20% code or something. So I am waiting!

For the 300mm f/4, go with the 1.4x II instead of the III. The mk III is slightly better, but the improvements are so slight you'd never tell the difference between them with that lens.

I agree that the 1.4x III is only slightly better than the 1.4x II, but the 1.4x I and 1.4x II have the same optics so there really is no reason to upgrade your 1.4x I at all.

Mk I Vs. MkII Vs. MkIII Versions

The current models of Canon EF T-cons are the "Mk III" versions.

Differences between the MkIII and the MkII include the following:
Both T-Cons have had new optical designs
The MkIII T-Cons include new Flourine coating for added protection fo the glass
They have been redesigned to match perfectly the latest Canon MkII IS Super Telephoto line

Differences between the new MkII and the older Mk I T-cons include the following:

Weather sealing was added to both
The 2X had a complete overhaul of the optics
The 1.4X remains the same design optically adding only the weather sealing and some new coatings.
The MkII 2X T-con has been redesigned to allow "stacking" of the 1.4X behind it. This was not possible with the Mk I 2X.

Whoops haha. For some reason I was under the impression they both got an optical overhaul from VI to VII. Good to know.

Sometime you might try the Kenko Pro 300 DGX 1.4X. Some people like it better than the Canons and it's a lot less expensive. The older "DG" slowed autofocus more than the Canon do. But the more recent DGX supposedly is improved in that respect.
