Does anyone know if the f8 AF firmware upgrade for the 1dx will also be applied to the 5d mark 3?

I am sitting on the fence about whether to upgrade my 5d2 and I think it comes down to the f8 issue. I would like to be able to AF my 300mm f4 with my 2x extender and that would be worth the cost of the upgrade.

In the meantime, af will work with non reporting extenders.

AF F8 works with a Kenko Teleplus 300 pro and 70-300L.

The specific combo I am interested in is the Canon 2x with the 300mm f4L both of which I already own.

I think I am going to wait. Googling this it is not at all clear that the 5d3 firmware upgrade will be the same as the 1dx. If anyone has any urls with further info I would be grateful.

Canon have said the 5DMKIII will AF at f/8 with the new FW. What else are you looking for?

There's plenty of websites listing what the firmware update will bring, this site http://www.gizmag.com/canon-5d-update/24757/ (external link) shows it. It will only be the centre cross type focus points that will AF at f8 but that will be a massive help for using slower lenses and converters. A f4 lens with a 2x converter will be fantastic, imagine a 600 f4 with a 2x MkIII converter, up to 1200 and AF to boot. Shame they couldn't do the same with the 7D in its next firmware update.

The firmwares are of course not the same, as in being identical. They drive different cameras. But they are saying the AF capability at f/8 will be the same, once they've done that and some video stuff for the 5D Mark III.

"Everybody" praised the previous 1D-models for having AF at f/8, but they only had one single AF line (not cross type) at the center point that worked with f/8. So it was equivalent with the first EOS cameras from 1987, when using f/8 on a 1D.

ok that is helpful thanks. the piece i read was about whether the red/black af point colour fix for the 1dx could be applied in a similar fashion to the 5d3. i know it is a different topic but it made the whole firmware update seem a bit vague and subject to change. i guess reading the above that some aspects are more nailed down that others.

Last I heard Canon was having a problem with the red/black AF on the 5D3.
