Not exactly sure, I bought it from an antique store.

From what I know, back then, we had gas lighting with a key type valve by the door. Turn the key and use a match to light the light, turn the key when you leave to extinguish the light.
Then Edison invented the light bulb and electricity replaced kerosene lamps and gas lighting.
Electricity was such new technology, people were scared of it, because you couldn't see it.
Hence the sign.

I'm jealous. I would love to have that sign. So much history... I'm definitely going to read up on it.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

So why don't you enlighten us as to how you've determined that it's 'not real'???

I'd be interested to know this too.

Did you guys see they're making repro Edison bulbs? They're really cool looking in the right fixture.

I saw some retro edison bulbs in a chic bakey/restaurant yesterday. The place was done like an old factory and the bulbs looked great.

I am not old enough to remember signs like this but, I did live in an apartment house in Brooklyn, NY which still had gas jets (inactive) protruding from the wall. My parents told me that this was the first building in Brooklyn that had electric lights installed. I don't know if that was true but, I remember as a kid trying to turn the jets on. Kids do the strangest and most stupid things...

It kind of makes me smile. A building from the 1970's is considered old in Southern California.
