I've been lurking on the fringes of the Forum for a while now, and have finally achieved digital status.
I went out and got my Christmas Present to Self today - and am totally in awe of this lovely machine.
I just have to figure all the buttons and dials and settings, and hopefully this weekend go out and shoot some stuff. Can't wait!
I'm sticking to the 18-55 kit lens to start with. I also have an EF 50mm 1.8 II and a 75-300 4-5.6 USM II ( metal mount but otherwise pretty similar to the III ) and a flimsy tripod that probably ought to be upgraded..
And a Canon Eos 100 (Elan) with a 28-80 that I still love very much..
L fever has bitten , but I figured get the camera first, learn how to drive it, then upgrade the glass. And I have enough to be getting on with for now.
I really enjoy reading the posts and getting the information that is shared so freely - a great bunch!
All the best for the New Year,
Steve and a 20D:D

I'm right with you, man. I got my 20D two days ago, and I'm diggin' life. People respect me more; they like me. I'm suddenly better looking.

Life is sweet with the 20D...

I followed your epic purchase - part of the push to get me shopping came from you!
This is by far the best thing I ever bought ( and I have a parachute I love a lot too, saves my life and all that, and a great dog!)
I hope I can do it justice

Congrats on your purchase. My best advice if you want to stick with the kit lens for a while, is to stay as far away from this forum as possible. If not, pretty soon you'll be buying lenses that cost as much as your camera :) .

too true, I nearly got the 17-40mm and 70-200 f4 at the same time - credit card would have coughed blood!

In the meantime I will simply aspire to L.

That's how it always starts...someone gets a camera with a letter after the name--"D"--then you have to get another letter--"L"...then different numbers with a letter---5D---then a bunch of letters and numbers---1DMk2N...then more l's....congrats!

The great thing about the L glass is it's an investment that doesn't fall like our camera bodies do...

To me, the escence of the L glass is the wide apertures on the Zooms.... and the build quality... Smooth zooms and a focus ring that actually works. The other biggy to me is that all my L's are 77mm front - Hence lens caps rotate freely as I swap lenses... small point but big when it's pissing down.

The real wonder of the 20D is high ISO low light sports work - I beats everything but the 1dMkII - Makes Nikon D2's look stupid.

The 20D is a beauty - You won't regret it. Buy the grip, but make sure that AA battery pod has gold contacts else you are being sold old stock that has been recalled.

Have fun!

Congrats on the 20D Steve!

The others are correct, start hanging out here often enough and you will be spending more money if you don't have strong willpower. I find myself fighting the urge to run out and buy more equipment all the time.

All my equipment except the 20D body and the kit lens was equipment that I had from my 35mm EOS Rebel G. As difficult as it is seeing some of the terriffic shots that people post with the L's, I'm constantly reminding myself that I need to learn how to become a better photographer with the equipment that I already have first. After all, if I can't compose a shot, expose correctly, focus properly and create photographs that others find interesting, then all the better glass in the world is only going to give me sharper out of focus, boring, over/underexposed photographs that nobody wants to look at.

I would agree with many others that the kit lens is a little soft, but it is more than adequate for learning the subtleties of the 20D and then move on from there.

Dude, that is funny. I My 20d will be here tomorrow. Upgraded from the 300d. Does that mean that I will suddenly get prettier? Wow! An added bonus! As for the expense, the great thing is that you can sell and trade this equipment at very little loss. For instance, I bought the 100 macro for $400. Used it for 6 months and turned around and sold it for $390. I got to use it for 6 months for only $10 plus shipping. I broke/became loose the hotshoe on my 300d that I paid $500 for and sold it as is for $350 as is. I bought the 24-70L for $965 and traded it for a 20d. I keep reminding my husband This equipment I am buying is a no lose situation.

Hey if anyone wants to sell me their dRebel XT's now that you've all jumped up to the 20D.... drop me a line as long as it's in mint condition with relatively short usage on it.

Oh... and yeah... this forum has cost me at least $2500 in the past 8 months alone.... READER, BEWARE. There should be some type of warning sign before you are allowed to sign up here :-)
