Frosty Birds

Hello everyone! This morning was quite beautiful, with a very heavy frost. I haven't been doing as much bird photography as I used to, but this morning made me realize what I'm missing.
However, I do have a problem: These shots don't look perfectly sharp to me... does anyone else notice this? I know a couple at least were shot at around 1/000 shutter speed, with a 580EX II, 60D, and 100-400L. I don't know, they just don't look sharp to me... is it just me?

Well the bird in #3 looks just a little out of focus to my eye, but the section of the branch just above the bird's head looks sharp. I think that's just a case of the focus missing the bird and not a problem with the lens. Also the last one does seem just a bit soft to me. The others look very nice though. Lovely set!

Maybe just a tad off especially in #3 as mentioned. Ever check the MA on this combo-think the 60D has that feature. Great series, nonetheless.

Unfortunately the 60d does not have MFA.
However, these photos do not look out of focus to me.
I guess it depends on how far away from the birds you were.

if you were close (under 20 feet) then a couple COULD be considered a tiny bit soft.
but if you were over 20 feet away I think they are more than acceptable.

I just noticed something. On the 100-400 SOMETIMES f7.1 is sharper than 5.6. So if light allows try out that aperture.

Most of them look sharp to my eyes. A couple of them appear to be focused on the branches just on the close or far side of the bird. Don't look like a problem with the lens. They are all well done.

Nice set but they are soft, the Nuthatches are better than the rest. Were you using a pod of any sort? Even at 1/1000 just the slightest movement will result in softness.

BGgraphy, really? even at that high of a shutter speed? I typically don't have a problem that high. I still accuse my 60D of not being quite right since the day I bought it refurb from Canon...
