I have been doing sports photography for a long time, and just came across a new situation with Shutterfly that I have been unable to figure out exactly. I have an account with Exposure Manager for any images that I am primarily looking to post in a gallery and sell. For my kids' teams, I have moved away from that and just post them in Facebook, since that is where they really want them and I'm not specifically looking to sell to my kids' teammate's parents (been there, done that, didn't like the outcome).

My daughter just started the club volleyball season, and her team mom setup a team site on Shutterfly. I've never seen this before. She's using it primarily to make her job easier... has the calendar of practices/training/tournaments on there, and assignments for meals, and anything else for organization. The site has a gallery too... big shocker there. She is encouraging us to upload images of the team there. I've got mixed feelings about it because I know that these 15-17 year old girls could care less about Shutterfly, and really just want them on Facebook so they can tag them, comment on them, and show them to friends. I can very easily publish my images to Facebook from Lightroom with zero effort. But this Shutterfly thing got me thinking that if I put them there (team mom's idea, not mine), I might end up making a few bucks. If I'm going to put them somewhere inconvenient for me, I'd be more apt to do it if I'm getting something in return.

Has anyone used this system before?

I can't find the options for photographers to make a few bucks by uploading pictures to a team site.

I've used shutterfly for years, but it seems like the picture galleries are usually intended for free upload so a group can order prints and books from the shared pictures.

They do have a pro option (http://www.shutterfly.com …ell_my_photos_sign_up.jsp (external link) ) where you can set your own pricing, but I think this would be tough to integrate with a team site where the other galleries are free pictures.

FWIW, I really like the quality of Shutterfly books, but the quality of their prints are the worst I've seen. I've done vacation and family pictures... they always include offers for free prints when we order a book. I end up throwing the prints away.

I would not want the final representation of my sports photography to delivered with that quality of printing, even if the profit margin was twice as good as the other labs.

If you do consider using their pro account to provide products, make sure you send some samples to yourself before you offer them to customers. Of course, that applies to other print-fulfillment services as well.

Agree. I use Shutterfly for several books. A little pricey, but very easy to use. Prints on the other hand not so much.

Not for sports but for other things (church mission trips and the like). It's nice because you can password protect each gallery which parents like.

Since you're not into making money off of them, this could work for you, as they'd order what they want and pay cheap prices for the prints.

On EDIT:

iHigh will do the same thing, and a little better. You can offer the prints to be sold, even make some money for your booster club.

That's good to know. I'm sure I'll be back with more iHigh questions. I have not been getting quick response from the booster club president at the school in setting my up the way you suggested.

Hey, also added a long lens back to my garage... not as long as the one I sold you, but my first big white with IS! It should be here on Monday.
