I want to give my two oldest kids a little Christmas gift that involves mounting a photo on pieces of driftwood that I brought home from a recent trip with them to Eleuthera. The wood is roughly 6" wide by 14" long or so.

My question is what is the best way to take an image that is in a 6x4 or 10x8 format and crop and print to fit on the wood (obviously it won't cover the whole thing). Should I just crop to the approx dimensions I want and put it on a blank 14x11 background then cut out the image when the print is done or is there a good way to handle this "issue"

alternatively, I could also print 4-5 small images at a sqaure aspect ratio and place them side by side (not touching of course) on the wood. That might be cool as well. Same issue though, crop to 1x1and size to whatever printed size I want???

Sorry, I know nothing of printing so this part is really lost on me.

first you need to decide what your final output size will be. lets assume 5x12 (to fit on 6x14 driftwood slab). then, you need to know how it will be printed and use closest available print size. i use Mpix, they offer print size 8x12. take your 5x12 image and add a border to bring it to 8x12. eg: in photoshop, re-size the canvas to be 8x12. after rcv'g print, trim off the border.

your second idea of small square prints work also. Mpix (and other labs) offers square size prints such as 4x4. use that size, or do same trick with borders to make your final output 3x3 or whatever you want.

good luck!
