Where do you go for photographing birds in Wisconsin during winter? I've been to Horicon a few times, mostly during Fall. But I heard there are not many birds there during winter. Where else do you go to?

If you can find a place with open water, for instance where one river empties into another you will probably find some waterfowl. There are woodpeckers, nuthatches, goldfinches, redstarts etc but you probably won't find them in numbers unless you find an area where they feed. Some people have luck by making setups near feeders where the birds can perch. Keep in mind that the birds have all they can do to stay alive in the Winter. You definitely do not want to do anything that will scare them away and waste precious energy 7D Mark II 6D 100mm f 2.8 macro 180mm f 3.5 macro, MP-E-65 300mm f 2.8 500mm f4 Tokina 10-17mm fisheye 10-22mm 17-55mm 24-105mm 70-300mm 70-200 f 2.8 Mk II 100-400mm Mk II 1.4 TCIII 2X TCIII 580EX II 430 EX II MT 24 EX Sigma 150-600

The Fox River from Kaukauna (Thousand Islands Nature Center) all the way to the Mouth up in Green Bay has more then enough eagles and waterfowl to keep you busy. Another bird to try your luck with is all the hawks! I putz around on the rural roads and just keep a watchful eye out for them. They are out there!! Froze my __s off last Sat at Bayshore Park and had the place to myself, 25 mph winds keeping the birds flying, white caps. The whole Bay was ice free, went back on Sun and wind blew the ice in. Open water was about 1/2 mile off shore and could count the birds seen as 1 !!!! A single Raven flew by before I pulled the plug. The rivers and Lake Michigan shoreline are all we have for open water so it is what it is!!! Good luck and see you out there! 7D/40D and an ever increasing pile!!
