the question is am I going to regret it - I got a great deal with for a brand new lens for 1980 (don't ask me how or where I got it but got it from an authorized dealer).

BTW no new 24-70 f2.8 IS on the cards for next year but expect price drop to around 1999-2099 by Q1 next year. So a marginal price correction is on the cards.

I also have a question - with this purchase my sigma 35mm f1.4 plans are gone with the wind - will I miss a 35 mm 1.4.

PS: On a side note what filter should I use on the new 24-70 - 82mm filters are so expensive.

You won't regret your purchase! It's made me put off buying primes in its range which is a good thing for the wallet. Super sharp even wide open at 24mm!! All the mk2 glass I have is really nice! Pricey but in the long run, won't need to replace!

With your 5D mk3, you won't need faster than 2.8 as the higher ISO's are so clean! Yeah, a 1.4 is fun to have but since getting the 5D and 24-70 v2, I haven't used my 50 1.4 at all. The DOF is so thin at 1.4 it's a pain getting enough of the subject in focus.

Don't skimp on a filter...I use B&W.

You won't regret it.

Whatever you do, don't ruin it by sticking a cheap filer on it.

yes probably a 14-24 next year or a cheap 16-35 used next year if the bonus comes through. nothing beats a f1.4 at low light light?

a prime is a prime - i never liked the 24-105. Let me use the 24-70 for a few days - either it goes back to the dealer, or in the POTN section. Obviously the savings that can be had for the next person if I don't like the lens would be awesome.

I like primes 35, 50 (sometimes) - and 70-200 mostly for general shots/portraits.

Superb lens. Although I don't have one, you will be impressed with the improvements if you ever used the old 24-70 based off the samples I've seen.

Seems like most ppl are holding off on the 24-70 II (including myself) every store I go to has tons of stock!

Hopefully you are right about the price dipping below $2,000, because that's exactly what I'm waiting for!

What?? A lot of places except Adorama and BHphoto don't have this in stock - maybe 1-2 thats why the prices are holding up. There is a 100USD discount right now - Amazon does not even have stock - had a stock of 5 which came and went in exactly 9 mins - there would be a price correction in view of a the tamron who because of the IS but with a few average points is picking up in the amateur end (for lack of a better word) of the market. Prices should settle around 2099/1999 (hopefully) by Q1 end.

Have to say I don't agree with this. I bought one a couple weeks ago and it was out of stock at Amazon and many places... had to go through an Amazon partner which I hate to do but wanted the lens.

+1 on this... how in the world could anyone know if you are going to miss a lens you don't have???

I sold a 24-105 f/4 IS and a 24-70 f/2.8 I to buy the II, and I'm quite happy with it. What I really wanted was a 24-70 2.8 in the form factor of the 24-105, and that is exactly what the II is, and its very sharp to boot. So I'm quite happy with it.

thanks man - it was hard to chose this over the 35mm 1.4 - i would eventually get it, probably the sigma later on. Right now feel the zoom might be more versatile - will use the sigma 30 on a crop for my trip to India and use the 24-70 on the 5dmk3 - maybe leave the 70-200 behind.

Never know what the customs at India have in store - everytime its a different story - last time I emptied a bottle of alcohol into the sink they wanted me to pay duty since I was 250ml over the limit i.e. two litres

I could be wrong. But the three times I went to BH Photo to test the lens, the guys asked me if I wanted it because they had stock. My friend who works at J and R says they have lots of stock and its not moving so well. So if anybody who is interested..go stop by JandR (full retail at $2,299 though)
