Scenario:

- 2 off camera flashes.. one in group B, other in group C
- 1 on camera flash (which is obviously group A)

I know that if you go into the group mode (GR) you can set their power manually. However, is there a way, lets say you are shooting and you want to turn one of them completely off.. not 1/128 power (which is the lowest they go to).. but to completely turn it off and use only one of them (for backlight / dramatic kind of effect).. like for one or two photos.. and then go back to both of them again like they were previously set up.

is that possible?

Ive tried and I can turn one down to 1/128.. but can't figure out how to switch one of them off completely from on camera speedlite and only use one of them.

Why not just simply turn them off manually?

I can imagine, it takes less time, then turning it off in the menu.

Because they are usually very high up on the stands.. to turn them off manually during a reception you'd have to lower down the flash.. turn it off.. then go take the photo.. come back.. turn it on.. higher the stand up again.

Its too much of a hassle when you are shooting quickly.. just wondering if there is a such feature in these flashes or am i hoping for too much lol

You go into your group mode then you go to your 'B' flash then you go through the menu and it should say 'on/off'

Page 66 of the manual seems to indicate one can turn off a group.

The new group mode, which requires for example a 5D Mark III to be supported, does allow a group to be set to E-TTL, Manual, External metering or Off. So it's indeed possible.
But even in the old system, where you have only A,B and C, and can't select the mode separately between them, you can select three different setups for the master. A+B+C and A:B C will fire all three groups, but A:B will not fire group C. This works in both E-TTL and Manual.
