Sorry , I could not find a printer forum
Anyway my HP C8180 just flashes and HP just say replace it .
O K , What is a good printer to replace it with ?
Probably end up with canon , but prefer one that can be fixed if it breaks .
The biggest I print is 8.5 X 11 and then just to give away .

I think you'll probably get better response in the "RAW, Post Processing and Printing" forum, or maybe the sub-forum "Computers">

Canon and Epson both have good photo printer options. I'd advise you not to go "cheap", choose a budget and then look at printers that match your budget, then you can ask for input about particular printers!

pinto - thanks , I will go check it out . "RAW, Post Processing and Printing"
Tonylong - thanks - I kind of figure it will be over 300 . If buy cheap you mean one of the 49 dollar specials - that is not going to happen .
I would prefer an all in one , just not enough room for a scanner and printer . The c8180 has card readers that I don't need use [Usb 2 and I use firewire] and a light scribe burner which I don't use either .

Epson R800 or whatever it's newer version is now?

Define "good". I think a dedicated photo printer will still give better results then an all in one.

I would get the canon pixma pro 9000. This printer can be bought for around $100.00. This printer produces amazingly good color pictures . I have a 13x19 picture on my wall and it looks amazing. If you buy this printer I would buy the ilford smooth pearl paper. Had this printer for a little over a year and has worked flawlessly with no problems.

Thinking of getting the Canon Pixma 9000 mark II and using a refill kit with it. Plan is to take the photos and print them out so people can take them same day from parties. :D

Like Rene, I'd go for the Epson R800. I'd also shy away from "dual purpose".

Canon and Epson are the main players in the printer world, I have been happy with my R2880 A3+ so I'd stick with Epson if and when I need to buy again.

The problem is that you are compromising in all areas. Fewer inks means less color control when printing photos, built-in scanner means lower quality scanning control and probably lower resolution as well.

I've made acceptable prints on low end office printers, including all-in-ones but I'd never call them photo quality prints. And, I'd never waste an expensive sheet of paper by running it through an all-in-one printer.

Agree with both printer and paper recommendation.

Thanks . I don't sell my shots or even get the money back for prints .
The H P C8180 printer that just died has 6 ink carts - looking for about the same - and I do things like this year I copied both mine and wife's passport [In case they disappeared and scanned to computer .
Most [99 %] of shots I print are given away to family as 8.5 X 11's .
I have seen several of my shots that were printed at 17 X 22 , and one at 17 X 30 that looked no better being sent out to be done than the one I printed .
No one I know studies the prints - it is - "that was at the wedding " or " that is uncle so and so ".

It is actually cheaper to send large prints out to costco etc. than to print them yourself but for the convenience of making 8x10 and smaller prints, epson and canon both make comparable printers at any given price point. I have always preferred epson printers as I shot people and like the skin tones I can get out of my epsons. I only use it print small novelty items, typically, and the odd 5x7 in a pinch. I would avoid "all-in-one" printers, and you MUST learn how to set your printer to the highest quality settings. Some people don't ever learn and they wonder why they don't get best results. Good paper, proper settings. One thing I HATE about Epson printers though, is that they will stop working when they think they are out of ink, and they are not. researching on the internet, there are ways to trick it back into continuing until actually empty, but I've never done it.

Thanks , I know it is a little cheaper to go to costco for prints , it is just a time thing .
The 1st of month I was at a wedding , had plenty of time between wedding and reception . Went home picked out a good shot of bride and groom , removed a few shadows and printed 4 - 8.5 X 11 shots for parents and grand parents [grand parents were from out of town .]
I went to costco and had 212 printed at 4 X 6 [50 were the same as the 8.5 X 11 -2 at each table - rest for brides maids] the shots were of just the wedding - 2 of each . the mother of bride and the mother of groom each got a set .
