Hello All,

Have just joined the site to get some expert help on purchasing a new DSLR. I am lucky enough to have been given a £2000 christmas box to purchase a camera and lens for a safari i am going on next year. I am not that new to dslr and have a 300d at the moment. Yes i know that old but i did buy it a long time ago with a view to get a better one at a later date.

Have been looking at a few eos d's but there seems to be loads of different ones out there. I will be using it for wildlife , landscapes and aircraft photography, so think a zoom lens would be best. This is where my search stopped asthe choices are huge.

Can anyone help with the best possible solution, ideas or even current deals that are out there??

Thanks in advance

Tony

I'd go with a canon 7d with the kit lens (18-135 or 28-135) and a 70-300, or 70-200 f/4 IS if you can swing it. I'd also pick up the 50 1.8

5D Mark II Gripped, 60D Gripped, 450D, 24-105 f/4L, 85 1.8, 70-200 f/4L IS, Nifty Fifty, 28 1.8, B+W/Lee/Cokin/Hitech filters, 430ex II x2

with the appropriate lens the 60D, 7D, 650D will all get you good wildlife and aircraft shots . And it's the lens that can really add to the cost!

60d or a 7D.

depends on how important the AF ability is to you, if you plan to plan to shoot a lot fast moving objects, get a 7D. otherwise the 60D with a set of nice lenses will do more for you.

It not only depends on AF, but the importance of video as well (which I know nothing about).

Regarding AF; If the aircraft you shoot are static, and you don't plan on shooting sports or dashing cheetahs, you might consider 60D/T3i/T4i (with a kit lens) instead of the 7D and put the money towards long glass. There are threads here that compare those bodies:

I believe they use similar, if not identical, sensors.

If I was going on safari, I'd want some reach; maybe the 400mm f/5.6 if you can afford it. Nothing less than (as mentioned) 70-200 f/4L and a 1.4X teleconverter.

Opinions may (and will) vary. ;)

Thanks for the replies guys, the aircraft i will be shooting will be mostly moving so the 7d seems best for this.Is the 5dmk2 worth looking at or get a 7d and have more money for lemses?

Yes, 7D in this case, not a 5DII. The 7D will have more reach, and better AF than the 5DII.

Ya the 5dii's AF is not the greatest for moving subjects

I would definately recommend the 7D with the EF-S 18-135IS and EF 70-300 IS USM Lenses. A kit with these lenses should be available in your price range. Of course the EF 100-400 L is a great safari lens.

Definitely get a 7D and the 100-400L to go with it. The 100-400L is without a doubt, the 'most recommended' safari lens!

Canon EOS 7D | EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM | EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS |
EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM | 250D | EF-S 10-22 mm f/3.5-4.5 USM | 580 EX II |
