Why do retailers insist on sticking with shoddy UPS service?

I understand the retailer isn't really the problem here but some do not give you another option without calling and I really don't like have to spend time on the phone over a gear order. Here is part of the message I sent to the retailer:

I placed this order on Friday and it was shipped Friday via UPS Ground. Knowing it would be delivered today I placed a large 'UPS RING BELL' sign on my front door and spent the entire day waiting for it. Around 4:30 I did hear a horn blow outside which people do around here frequently. Later I found a UPS tag on the front door stating that they "attempted" delivery. We have two outdoor cameras and going over the video pretty much shows what happened: UPS driver pulls up blowing horn, sits in the truck for about thirty seconds looking at the door, then checks a few things on the tag, then runs down and slaps tag on door without ringing bell or taking package to door.

This isn't the first time they have done this and not even the first time with an Adorama package, the same thing happened with an order I placed with you in September 2009. My time is valuable and I'm not going to waste entire days waiting on UPS when they won't even bring the package to the door or ring the bell.

This is abysmal service on the part of UPS and in the future I would appreciate a method of delivery other than UPS.

I'd rant more here if this was something I really needed. I'm glad it isn't.

You'll get much better results complaining directly to UPS.

I did and was lied to and told tough luck. We don't guarantee ground and you would have to wait three days if we decided to take our time.

I've called UPS in the past and had much better results... I would think especially if you have the entire thing on video, they'd be interesting in knowing how their employees were wasting time. UPS isn't like FedEx where all of their drivers are independent contractors..

Whether they guarantee ground or not, I'd think that someone would be interested in answering why the driver just honked instead of at the very least, carrying the package to the door and knocking.

It's a recurring problem with their drivers in this area and this is (if I'm counting right) the fifth time I've been blown off on a signature required package. They load the drivers with so many packages to deliver over such a wide area they have to take shortcuts. The local manager told me his driver brought the package to the door, rang the bell, and waited three minutes which was total BS. He didn't seem to interested in the video. I'm trying to figure out how to work on the video, if I can find a way to cut and convert it I'll post it.

Sounds like a bad driver in your area.

I've had about 75/25 good/bad ratio with UPS but same can be said about FedEx as well as USPS...

This depends on who is actually delivering in your area. My UPS guy is wonderful.

I had an absolutely wonderful UPS driver in NC... mine here is good... but the one in NC was outstanding.. if the weather was bad, he'd call me and give me the opportunity to meet him somewhere in town instead of him trying to drive up my mountain in the snow..or let me change the delivery location over the phone... my FedEx guy in NC was absolutely awful though.

I'd blame on the laziness of the UPS delivery person. But I'm also a bit frustrated with Amazon (Prime member) and Adorama for not giving other options besides UPS, for delivering big ticket items.
However, I tend to put the packages on "will call" if I know UPS is the carrier since I can pick them up myself plus I can inspect the packages for any damages.

I've had worse with Fedex. I'd ordered some christmas cards from Apple's card store. Fedex 'delivered' them by throwing the package up on my balcony (2nd floor). Then didn't leave a note or anything.

I rarely go out on the balcony, so I didn't see them for 2 weeks.

I guess they all can have bad drivers. I remember that FedEx driver tossing a computer monitor over a fence. Here it's definitely the UPS drivers with the issues, USPS and FedEx have been quite good.

I managed to figure out how to 'return to sender' via the UPS tag number. Hopefully the retailer will get a credit from UPS and I don't get charged anything. After tying up an entire day I'm not risking more days and getting blown off a second time on the same package.

I suppose we can turn this into a 'vent on your delivery driver' thread. ;)

It definitely can vary by location. My UPS guy here is great. Actually there's a couple of them that deliver to my house and they're cool.

But to add to the horror stories lol...I actually lost a job once because of Fedex. I was waiting for a package from the company that just hired me, it was for a drug test. I never got it so after about two weeks of waiting I called the company. They said they were not giving me the job because I didn't take the drug test. I was like "what??, I'm still waiting for the package". They said it was delivered. Apparently they left it between the side screen door, which clearly states "DO NOT USE THIS DOOR" as it was a door to the basement and not used. About 2 weeks later I thought to look there, sure enough it was there. lol oh well.

i have befriended all of my driver's (fedex home, fedex ground, fedex express & ups) and have all of their cell phone numbers.

I am always more than happy to meet them somewhere along their route earlier in the day.

Maybe you could try that route.

I don't move as much gear as you do and this was incoming. This joker couldn't even be bothered to ring the bell.
