The bug for a super telephoto has totally hit me. I also have a 70-200 and a 1.4x TC, so I think I'll be going with the 400 prime. Then all I'll have left to get is a macro lens(Bokina) and a cheap zoom(28-135) for the girlfriend to use.
It's funny how "having all the bases covered" is so important. Macro, ultrawide, standard zoom, wide fast prime, telephoto fast prime, telephoto zoom, super telephoto.
I guess we all just want to have sufficient gear for doing basically whatever we want whenever we want to with photography, huh?
I know what you mean about bases covered....I mean...is it really important to have a lens that delivers excellent IQ, in a size/package that makes sense, from 8mm-600mm? Because starting with my Sigma 8-16mm, and ending with my Canon 300mm f/2.8 non-IS with a 2XTC, that's sort of what I'm trying to do...only I'm also trying to balance bang/buck with each lens, hence the inclusion of a few Sigma primes, and a 20 year old non-IS version of the 300mm 2.8.
But- even though it's a hobby, I do use my camera a lot for various things- shots of my daughter indoors, traveling on vacations 2-3 weeks a year, plus trips to 5-6 racetracks per year, nevermind the random stuff in-between. So, I guess that's an excuse, right?
