Both number one and number two are spot on topic IMO.

Take away the flash and the pics could still hold their own; even with the same exposure settings. The flash adds to the pictures but its the ambient that gives the pictures their feel.

Nicely done on the balancing act.

Looks like you put some thought into your light placement too. I do wish the flash was a little more on axis to avoid the harsh shadow created by the cheek.

I run into the same issue photographing my baby girl. I always end up having to place the key so much more on axis than I do photographing older people.
