Hello all,

I am graduating college next year, so that means it is time to start looking at potential employers now. I want to start designing a website, and the name seems to be my first spot of trouble. Hosting will be my next issue, but one thing at a time. I was hoping shawnsmithphoto.com or shawnsmithphotography.com would be open, but they are both taken already. My next idea was to go by my nickname, Shawnsy, and go with shawnsyphoto.com or shawnsyphotography.com but I dont know if that sounds too unprofessional. Any ideas for a name? My focus is going to be photojournalism, my major is journalism and I want to eventually work for Nat Geo or Time magazine. Thanks!

That's a tough one, don't rush it. When you hear one that fits, that's when it will be right. Good luck!

Why does it have to have your name?

How bout "artisticphotostudio.com" or "prophotolab.com" or studioXphoto.com ?

It doesn't have to necessarily be my name, but as a photojournalist I thought it might be more professional.

I am told that if nameofyourtownphotography.com is available it will help you in search engine placement. Google like it when a person search for "Dallas Photographer" and there is a website www.dallasphotographer.com (external link)

you are limited, or course, if you ever want to move.

I would take care of this sooner rather than later. Google also likes old sites and it takes a while to build up links.

I'm thinking of using S2 Photography (S Squared for Shawn Smith), and I came up with a basic concept for the logo. Thoughts?

The name should not be the first thing to consider. Overall look, first sketches - go from there.

You will probably disagree.

What about something like "ssmedia.com" or replace the "ss" with "pj"

Your name should reflect your branding. Your style of your photography. No, don't name the obvious, pj.....com.

You would be surprised at how many domain names are already taken. I am lucky to own my name and my name photography but anything even remotely interesting or that ends in photography or imaging or images is already taken.
