Have just been playing around with JPEG's on my newly acquired refurbished S95 (have usually worked with RAW from 5DII).

When I import into DPP, all the images have a "grey" look. Really awful. I can improve the look in DPP but at first I thought they all came out of the camera "grey" and blamed the camera. However, I just discovered that if I export them to Photoshop (without doing anything to them), they immediately become more bright and saturated and no longer have the grey look (of course, they are now TIFF files, but that shouldn't matter).

So I am wondering if if the way the images look in DPP is even accurate, and whether I should do any processing there because it would be based on an inaccurate starting point.

Anyone know anything about this? I haven't tried RAW on the S95 yet--this is just with the JPEG's.

How do you have DPP's Preferences set up? On the Color management tab, you should have "Default setting of work color space" set to sRGB (because that is presumably the color space of the jpgs) and "Color matching settings"/"For display" set to "Use the OS settings" (because that is what PS does).

Can you post a raw file ? we will tell you if it looks ok in DPP.
Also it will be useful to post screenshots of your DPP preferences.

I haven't really used DPP before so I haven't set up any preferences. :o
I will go and look at that now.

Can't post a raw photo because they are all jpeg so far.

Is the camera shooting in Adobe RGB (as per your DPP settings) or sRGB? I'm no expert but from what I've read here that might make your images appear funny.

OK -- I just changed the preferences. They are now shown below. However, the photos still look like they have a thin grey film on them (the colors seem somewhat desaturated).

I see no "Use the OS settings" under preferences under the Color Matching Settings. How am I missing this?

JHenley, I don't know. Just got the S95 and not sure how to check on that on this camera. I have read most of the manual (printed it out), but haven't seen anything about that.

By the way, they seem to look OK in Photoshop and in Elements. They only look "off" in DPP for some reason.

Can you choose your S95's color space? I have been googling it and have not found the answer. (On my 5DII I use Adobe RGB.)

Apparently Adobe RGB is not an option on the S95 (I found this on the web so it must be true, LOL):

OK, Maybe this will work to show you the difference. I took a screenshot of a photo in DPP (yes, I know it is a terrible photo--it was in a school classroom--a quick shot during a practice for a Christmas program). Then I transferred the same photo into Photoshop (did nothing to it) and took a screenshot of it again.

Oops--can't do that. File sizes too large. I am afraid if I start resizing I will introduce other factors.

Guess I just won't worry about it.

It is only in the Windows version.
