I have been waiting for a wonderful snowy background for my grosbeaks such as Al's on his beautiful owl images... but alas, I got rain instead and most of the snow along my area of the Big Lake has melted.
So the backgrounds of my new grosbeak shots look very un-seasonal. However, I was pleased with the closeness and detail I got with the 400 f/5.6 a couple mornings ago.

The first shot is un-cropped, so it was difficult to get the female Evening Grosbeak completely framed.

Wonderful captures, Dave. I'm quite envious as I've seen them only fleetingly this fall. And they are so gloriously colored in this otherwise drab time. You have done well, my friend.

:D :D Once again you've made my day Dave, even without the snowy background they're all beautiful shots.

No snow, but wonderful shots nonetheless, Dave. A great set.

You want snow, come to Illinois! Actually the first snow in 290 days, 6 short of the record. Sure there are plenty of wrecks out there as the nuts forget how to drive. But I digress-great shots as usual, Dave. Don't see them here.

Great pics, and I think your backgrounds are fine, the birds really pop from the winter-like browns and grays.

Dave, these are wonderful shots of the Morning Grosbeaks, glad they are hanging around to give you some photo ops :) And I LOVE your Pine Grosbeaks too, something that is a rarity here and I haven't seen any of in a few years. Maybe your luck there will spill over to NS!

Dave, we don't always get what we want, but these are an outstanding substitute. All, great, and I never see the pine grosbeaks.

Hi Al... thank you... I was hoping you would get a chance to photograph these grosbeaks with that beautiful snow BG... I don't think I have seen a more perfect snow BG than with your Great Gray Owl shots...
