Anyone know of free video web tutorials on using LR3 that show how to turn boring home studio shots into dramatic portraits? I started using LR3 earlier this year so I'm still a newbie. I know the basic mechanics of LR3 but want to explore the creative side of what it offers.

Other than YouTube and SLR Lounge (which really focuses more on LR fundamentals), where else can I look?

Knowing that its totally feasible to create a dramatic portrait in a home studio using very simple, yet well controlled lighting. And knowing Lightrooms limits, I''m not sure what the question is.

Can you post one of your pics you want to edit and a link to a sample pic that illustrates where you would like to take your image?

What I mean is something like this easy-to-follow, step-by-step tutorial, only more of them (and free):

I know the photo in the video is not technically a studio shot, but its an example of how a photo (that to me looked great to begin with) enhanced in LR by the author, gave it that extra pop. There were several settings that were adjusted in the video, things that I (as a newbie) never thought of doing yet. I learned a great deal from this video.

Great, that makes sense. When I originally read your post I wondered whether you were thinking about doing something more drastic, like composting images, that cant be done or can't be done effectively in Lightroom.

Sounds like you are looking more along the lines of some intermediate or advance Lightroom training?

I believe there is either a thread or sticky on the subject here in the forum.

Lynda.com would be another good resource as well.

Personally, I find that a good "dramatic" portrait should generally start with dramatic lighting. If you start with something boring, it's gonna be hard to turn it into something dramatic.

They're not video tutorials, but most of the posts in this thread have a fair amount of instructions on how to get from the "before" to the "after."
Show us your RAW conversions - before and after

(edit) these two links will take you to the right page but not directly to the post, I guess.
Here's one that I did recently - not dramatic lighting, but still a relatively dramatic portrait I think:

Here's another one where I started with dramatic lighting:

Here's another one that I didn't put into that post. You can see almost all the settings I changed in the Basic pane on the right.

I second the recommendation for lynda.com - Chris Orwig's series on Lightroom were very thorough.
