I'm taking credit for this happening to me. There was this thinking in my mind, though wrong now, that I would pay the same price if not less using SM to fulfill my personal orders at Bay Photo. Smugmug isn't to blame when it comes down to it and I'm not trying to bash them. Lesson learned on my part.

For this next shoot I have that this topic was started for, I am going to look for a good company near me that will take care of my order. If that turns out to be unsuccessful, I will go to Bay Photo for printing. But since I'm close to L.A. it should not be an issue finding a good lab.

What was this for? That's a lot of money for an 8x10. I'm not saying you aren't worth that, but no way could I charge that and not get lynched.

It was a corporate event.
I've done many similar ones, where I was charging about 4K for 2-4 hours of work and a disk. I've stopped doing them last year as I don't enjoy them any more.

You can charge that much and there are organizations will pay that.
Just like there are people who will say no to a $10 for an 8x10, there are people who have no problem paying $500 for that same 8x10.
There are wedding photographers who charge $1,000 for a wedding and barely have clients and there are photographers who are always busy and charge 10K+ for a wedding. Same for family sessions, fashion, etc.

And if you can't get that, it's because you are not marketing yourself to those clients.

That's awesome. My issue is the niche I am in right now with this client just can not command that type of fee. If I do ever market myself for a larger scale client, I will have no issues with commanding a fee worthy of the event. But for a small town youth sports program, this seems fair to both sides. Plus I get a lot of contracted individual sessions that pay well.
