I've been shooting my grandson's HS basketball for the last 2 years. Today was Senior Day, and 3 seniors were honored. Each was given a 24x16 collage of pics of him during play.

Every one of the pics were shots I had taken. Made this old man feel useful again.

That's awesome!

Shot these last night, have yongnuo 565ex in one corner and canon 580 ex ll in the other. flash settings 1/2 power 70 zoom. Camera 7D setting 1000 iso f3.5 250 ss. Flashes aimed at top of the key maybe a little above parallel to the floor. Only 3rd game I've tried this with flash and this was the first not at home gym. Any suggestion to help improve these would be great. Started thread earlier didn't know this was here till someone said something on that thread.

Thanks

Yes, but the pics would look a bit better if the field-of-view were slightly downward rather than upward.

Because of the shadows in background?

Yes - the shadows and the rafters detract from main subject. Or, if the shots had been at a higher aperture for better bokeh, it would have been better.

I couldn't find what lens you were using. I typically shoot at 1/640 - 1/800 at ISO 1600-3200 with a 45/2.8 or 85/1.8 ... I only use my 28/1.8 for group shots.

I like the shots - you got good contrast ... maybe just a bit more sharpening in PP; some of the faces are a little soft. Soft may be good in a glamour shot, but sports is more hard-line.

They look a bit underexposed to me.

#1 Looks a bit oof or a large crop. I do like the action in it though. Ball, faces, action. Got it all.

#2 I would crop tighter if possible. But thats just my preference.

#3 Maybe a bit late on the trigger? And too bad about that light in the background. The ball kind of gets lost in the paint on the wall.

I do have trouble with exposure shooting basketball It seems to vary and I am either focusing on err focus or composure, assuming exposure remains +/- 1/3 stop from what I notice and I try to adjust in post. I am not sure I did with these.

#1 & 3 were far-end large crops.

Thanks for the comments.

I don't know how quick the AF is on that lens. Your action captures are good, so you must be following with focus OK. Jack up the ISO a notch - particularly for dark faces. Take some pics of dark faces early, and adjust ISO so you can see some detail on the screen. This will make most of the other pics slightly overexposed - but that's a relatively good thing because it gives you more leeway in PP. The only problem is a little loss of detail, so most pics will need some slight sharpening.

Just one opinion.
