Hello

I am going to buy a new lens from B&H (Sigma 17-50) and I wanted to buy the warranty they offer which is from Square Trade titled 'Square Trade Protection Plan'.

Just wanted to know if it's a good company to buy warranty from

PS. ¿Why am I buying warranty? It will be my main lens and I don't live in the US so the prices to fix things here are a bit expensive, so if anything happens to the lens I'll have warranty to fix it :D

Doesn't Sigma have like a crazy long warranty that is longer than the extended warranty?

As for Square Trade, I've used them a lot for smartphones and laptops and have made claims that were handled promptly. They are a reputable company.

I think they have 5 years in the US and 10 in Canada (not 100% sure) but If my lens happened to fall off my hands and break, Sigma support will charge me to fix it? opposed to buying the Square Trade warranty where I would only pay shipping I think?

I'm thinking more of buying the warranty if the lens breaks, cracks, dents & all that stuff, because I tend to shoot street photography and sometimes it gets crowded and the lens might fall

pass. lenses rarely go bad, unless you drop it. if they do its usually within the warranty period.

I don't know about that company, but I do have an extended warranty for a couple of other lenses. My homeowners policy will cover dropping lenses, but it costs extra.
I have had to replace the diaphragm and some electronics on my 35F2. The cost was not too bad, so I am not sure if the warranty would be cost effective - especially compared with a homeowners insurance rider.

The longer warranties exist only on ex lenses I believe.

You might want to check their policy and see if it works outside of the US?

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I've heard that they are a good company.

If you can get personal articles insurance that might be better for camera stuff, since it also covers damage that you cause and stolen items. For camera stuff people tend to get insurance more than warranties. Not sure what insurance is like in your country though.

In the US State Farm personal articles policy seems to be the most popular.

Lenses usually don't break too often by themselves (although it can happen).

I have bought many warranties from Squaretrade but haven't had the occasion to make a claim (thank god) so take it for what it's worth.

I have bought a Squaretrade warranty for my camera body but not for my lenses. The problem with buying Squaretrade for camera gear is that you have no control over where they send it in for repair and they may simply reimburse you for the cost of the lens and keep your lens. Neither of the two options may be attractive to you. I think most members here would never let anyone outside of Canon repair their lens.

Another potential issue with Squaretrade is that they take the value of the repair out of the remaining balance. For example, if you bought a $1000 lens and you had to send it in for repair and the repair costs $500. If you had to have it fixed again and they decided to reimburse you, you get $500 back and not $1000.
