I found the article (external link) that goes with and it's near Garberville, California and they are redwoods. Beautiful location!

Keep an eye out for a white 4 door Ford truck, and maybe we will cross paths. I get down to the redwoods about every 6 weeks.

The photo from the OP is probably near Founders Grove, not far from Garberville that one person mentioned. The pavement is notably different from Drury Parkway in Prairie Creek redwoods, where the road is even better. Both areas are exceptional for redwoods though, and each photogenic.

The shot below is Avenue of the Giants area, from several weeks ago.
