I've already exchanged this lens for a new one. However, I'm curious what would of caused this issue to happen? Lens was never dropped, dinged, nothing. Just noticed this after about a couple of weeks using it??

I had (2) used 35L's that had some type of play in the barrel in the same spot. I bought one brand new that had zero play at all.

The build could be much improved, that is for sure. I have seen this a few times with the 35L now. Not sure what happens to cause it though.

It certainly does not look normal and I just double checked mine, it has no play at all. Good job you changed it I think.

Whoa! That's no good!
I've got a rented one for the weekend and it doesn't do that. I'll be checking that next year when I am buying.

Interesting. To me, that is unacceptable when one pays over 1300.00 for an L lens. Superior build quality?? Hmmm, makes one wonder especially since you've seen this issue twice and it happened to me with a brand new lens less than 2 weeks old. What pissed me off even more was that copy was so damn sharp!!! (Haven't really used the new one enough to know if it's just as good). Did you ever send them to Canon for repair? Did you get rid of them because of the issue?

I wonder if one could chime in and explain what exactly causes this issue. I'm glad it happened within the 30 day return policy. Adorama shipped me a brand new one overnight.

Pretty sure that is an exception and not normal. It may be caused during shipping, or in stores with bad care. If this really was common it would be an issue that has gained buzz. Mine is solid and has been for years. Have even hit it on things by accident and it still looks mint.

Glad to see Adorama being such a good company. They let me exchange my new lens for a whole another new one no question asked...

Mine is solid. I bet some screw is loose inside or just came off. My 70-200mm f2.8 IS I did something like this on its front part. Had to send to canon for fix, like $180 + shipping.

There was someone here last week and dropped his lens and it came apart where your is moving. Maybe something happened during shipping.

Completely agree. I love their 30 day no questions ask return policy.

I did more research and I agree. I don't think this is a wide spread issue with this lens. I did run across simiailar issues on the Internet but it wasn't specifically geared towards the 35L. A few another lenses had the same problem.
