Nice to know if I take my 1Dx in to sub zero conditions, that it will perform better than I am likely to :D

I've had my T1i (500D) out in 10F (-12C) temperatures for several hours doing astrophotography with no trouble other than short battery life, and the grip with dual lithium batteries makes a huge difference in that. Unfortunately it was a pretty wimpy meteor shower that night, so in 200+ shots, I only got about 2 pictures with meteors in them.

Gripped 7D, gripped, full-spectrum modfied T1i (500D), SX50HS, A2E film body, Tamzooka (150-600), Tamron 90mm/2.8 VC (ver 2), Tamron 18-270 VC, Canon FD 100 f/4.0 macro, Canon 24-105 f/4L,Canon EF 200 f/2.8LII, Canon 85 f/1.8, Tamron Adaptall 2 90mmf/2.5 Macro, Tokina 11-16, Canon EX-430 flash, Vivitar DF-383 flash, Astro-Tech AT6RC and Celestron NexStar 102 GT telescopes, various other semi-crappy manual lenses and stuff.

I've used my 300D at -35. The biggest strain on the system at these temperatures is on the batteries. The camera couldn't care less.

The 1DX is a beast, no doubt, but the problem isn't the freezing, it's the thawing that kills cameras ;)

Looks like two different cameras in the pictures. A 1Ds and a 1Dx.

The article states there were about five cameras involved. All were Canon 1D models.

I'm pretty sure I have most (all?) of you beat here haha...I used to work up in Northern Canada as a reporter/photographer. At the time I had a 10D, a 20D and a 30D, mostly using the 10D and the 20D.

The coldest I worked/shot in was -55C or -70 Fahrenheit. That's right...-70 F. :D (-40C/-40F were to be had for weeks and weeks at a time). At that temperature, I was carrying tons of spare batteries...and was constantly warming them in my hands/pockets because the batteries would last a few minutes in the camera and then die, so every handful of shots I had to rotate batteries.

None of the cameras ever gave me any trouble at all...however, the LCD displays tended to "slow down" haha...
