I was walking out to get the paper one morning and caught a barred owl landing in a fir tree. It was about 60 ft up and 100 ft from the house, but in a tangle of branches. None of those shots came out. I had to leave for the morning, came home and it was still perched semi protected from the snow-hail. I watched the rest of the day as it eyed the squirrels and little birds at the feeder. Getting close to dark, it flushed. I ran outside and found it in the driveway perched above the mailbox in the open, ran back and got camera and tripod. I shot until it left. Shutter speeds were started at 1/60 and went down to 1/8 sec. not very conducive for telephoto lens. With this camera, iso 800 is my max. Take a lot and hope some are not blurred.
Rex

I love shots like this Rex, not only the fine capture of the Barred, but the complimentary BG of the lichen/moss covered trees... gorgeous settings... fine work.

Shot like that a well worth all the running around and setting up, Rex. Like Dave, i think the environment makes these shots extra special. Very nice!

Good job, Rex; I like the first one especially as it shows where he lives.

I too like the combo of the owl and the green of the surroundings.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Very nice, the background is awesome, as if you set it up just for this shot. Number 2 would be a wall hanger for me, well worth the effort.
