I am curious if there would be any major difference between the Sigma 30mm vs Sigma 35mm on a crop body to justify almost double the price?

Anyone tried both?

Here's a comparison of the two lenses. Take into account they're on two different cameras, which is really apples and oranges, but may help some.

The 30 mm will only work on a ASP-C sensor, whereas the 35mm works on FF and ASP-C.

Assuming you're referring to the newest 35mm that they put out, the primary differences, aside from focal length, are in the build/materials and the fact that the 35mm will be able to be used with the new, USB dock that is slated for release in 2013, which will allow users to micro-adjust focus on the lens and other settings on the lens from their own computer.

Sigma 30mm f1.4 woks fine not only on 1.6x crop but also 1.3x crop like 1d series. No issues. My sigma 30mm f1.4 on 1dmk2 was as good as 35L on my 5dmk3. Haven't tried sigma 35mm f1.4 yet.

Just to point out.. I have a Sigma 30mm and a crop body and love it.. I have no intention anytime soon to upgrade to FF.

But there has been a lot of buzz about the new Sigma 35mm so I was just seeing whether it is much better then 30mm

If you can get copy of 30mm f1.4 then it is very nice lens. Problem is there is lot of copy to copy variation. 35mm f1.4 is much better (it seems) in that regard and it is very sharp (better than 35L) from what I see/hear.

if you have no intent of going FF 30mm f/1.4 is a much better value. I've seen it recently for $350 at a few major retailers, which is 1/3 of the current price of 35 mm f/1.4.

I just sold my 30mm for the 35mm. If I would not have went ff I would have kept it. After reading all of the reviews and samples I cannot wait for the 35mm to arrive.

It would be interesting to see a direct comparison, but as long as I am shooting 1.6 crop only bodies, I feel no need to upgrade especially when I still have equipment needs that the extra $500 could do a better job of filling.

I'm torn between the two as well. I'm searching for something that would be as close to 50mm on FF as possible and the 30mm is damn close.

But the reviews of the 35mm seem too good to be true.

That and the difference in price is making me lean towards the 30mm as well.

Although both are great lenses, for myself I'd go with the 35mm because

a) in case you ever want to upgrade to FF your good to go
b) better build & optical formula
c) the biggest for me, USB dock which will allow compatibility with future EOS bodies.

Surely on crop bodies its barely visible - the difference.

Love my 30 on my crop as I've always preferred this FOV for general photography -- if I went FF I'd return to the 50mm format I used on my film cameras. The 35mm is a different lens on a FF (wider than you'd be used to with the kit you now have) -- a 50mm on a FF is closer to using the 30mm on a crop. If you like this focal length on your crop that is just another thing to consider.

I actually crossed over to FF in a 5D2 from my 60D and then went back to crop with a 7D since the 7D is really fast with burst shooting.

I like shooting motorsports so the 7D better suits my desires over the 5D2.

That being said, I wouldn't be "upgrading" per se, since I think the 7D is better bang for the buck for what I do.

30mm seems to be a better option for me IMHO.
