This guy was tough to get!
After "targeting" him for a couple weeks, the first time he finally cooperated was when it was practically night time. But, despite the low light, I was at least able to get something to turn out ok.

Canon 5D Classic w/ 400 f2.8 lens and 1.4 teleconverter
wide open at f4
1/13th of a second
ISO 800
minor adjustments in iPhoto

EDIT: Since we now have AMASS, I replaced the original image with another version of the same image. It is larger, and is cropped to 5x7 proportions, so as to be consistent with the other vertically-oriented images in my POTN gallery.

Tom,

That's a great buck. Though I spent 20 years in Moscow, Idaho (before moving up here to Alaska) I wasn't photographing seriously. Now you fellas make me think of heading back there, just to chase Elk and Whitetails. It's always good to be reminded of the opportunities available in the Northwest.

Wow Tom,

This guy was a brute! Well done!

I'm amazed he was able to dodge the hunters with that magnificent rack!

No, definitely not handheld! Even locked down on a very stable tripod, I had to snap off as many frames as I possibly could, in hopes that one or two would be sharp enough to keep. When using the big lenses, I simply don't handhold anymore . . . the results are never quite sharp enough for me, even at fast shutter speeds.

It's a very nice buck. You definately were about out of light with those settings! Good thing he held still for this photo.

Tom, Did you know he was in the area through scouting or did you just happen to be at the right place at the right time? ...or I guess the right time may have been a half an hour earlier for better light :)

Oh, I certainly knew he was there. I worked him in 2011, as well, so I was familiar with him.
He is somewhat skittish, and never too comfortable when I am near . . . but as with most bucks, that skittishness diminishes at dusk when the light is low. He never would've stood for me being this close when there was more light. Not unless he was with a hot doe, that is.

His swollen neck says he in full on rut, he might have thought you were looking pretty eligible bout then.
