Use external flash (mounted on your camera with bounce card or pointed at ceiling) learn how to use it and get better shots.
Indoor lighting dimmed for a candle shot doesn't provide a good photo op. f/1.8, extremely high ISO setting and slow shutter speed ... recipe for completely missing the shot.
The best answer I can give you is learning how to use a speed light. Then, you can get a decent shutter speed of 1/125 or 1/160, a 'useable' depth of field and a well lit shot all in one!
