Do you think they may not hire you because your not attractive? If that was the case, I would never be chosen. :)

Thank about that the next time a client says..."ummm nevermind" or never calls you back.

Well...let's now kid ourselves. We all get profiled to a certain degree, especially if you don't fit the ideal image.

I am a 5'6" Asian American. I'm not stupid enough to think that that doesn't have an impact on things, often times negatively.

That's just reality.

Exactly. I'm 63 (but look more like 53) so I'm sure that I lose some business because people think I'm "too old".

Does anyone here not take on certain wedding jobs because the way bride/groom/couple look? as in their physical appearance?

Is there anyone here who tries to only shoot for good looking bride/groom/couple?

Just a random thought that came into my mind.. wondering if anyone actually does this / has done it in the past?

The field of well-paying clients is small enough as it is.

Aw, come on Jim. Don't short change yourself. You look much younger than that...like 52. ;)

Anyone less than 5" 8" should not use the term "short change". ;)

the goal is to make everyone look good in a photo. i dont think anyone wants to be known as the photographer who makes fat people look good.

First, I am not and will never be a wedding photographer. I am generally not a fan of people and I hate crowds. So with that caveat, I have to say that if you want to take a beautiful picture, shoot something beautiful. You will not take beautiful pictures of ugly people. You may take nice pictures, or you may take interesting pictures but, ugly people in love are still ugly people.

I am not saying that they don't deserve to have their special moment recorded like everyone else. Their money will certainly spend the same. I do think that you take a certain risk if you have a lot of beautiful pictures in your portfolio and you take on an ugly subject. I would expect they are hiring you because you produce beautiful images.

Sure, my answer is far from PC but, I live in the real world. And, in the real world some people are beautiful and some are far from it.

Bob

True story.

When I do a bridal show, I always have a former client or two help me. Of course, I always have a photo of the former bride on display. After my last show, I received a call from a wedding planner who had a bride who wanted to book me (but did not because I was already booked on her date). This bride wanted to book me mainly because, in her words, "the (former)bride who was working my booth wasn't very pretty but my photo of her made her look gorgeous!"

I once met with a couple that was a bit short in the good looks dept... add in a lot of piercings and tattoos, spiked hair, black wedding dress... and I didn't want to shoot this couple, but other than me not liking their looks and ideas, there was no real reason for me to send them elsewhere....

and it was one of my favorite weddings ever!

don't judge a book by its cover...

Doesn't mean they would pass up $20K to do one, and it doesn't mean they haven't.

And some they show might not look nearly as good in person.

Every wedding I shoot gets sneak peeked and put on the website and the facebook page regardless of who the couple are.

With potential clients I only draw the line with not taking bookings when I get a bad vibe from a couple i.e. red flag client... which has nothing to do with looks, skin colour, race, sexual orientation or religion.

As Jim said everyone is beautiful on their wedding day, if a photographer can't capture that they haven't done their job properly.
