I've been pretty lucky lately spotting the local raptors

I was shooting trains the other day when this kite was out hunting. Good for the kite, not so good for the mouse

In the same area, a northern harrier joined the rodent reduction effort

Then, escaping the torrential rain in bay area this weekend, a buddy and I headed to the Sacramento NWR, where red tails and harriers abound

A great lead up to the holidays. Now if only Santa could produce a 600mm f4 Mk2!

These are some gorgeous shots, lack of a 600 notwithstanding.

#6 is a red-tail taking off out of a tree. They are perched all over the place up there, just waiting to swoop down on prey, while the harriers fly very low over the marsh looking for movement.

Beautiful series of shots! So crisp and clean. What lens were you using?

I noticed when we finally got a break in the rain that the raptors were out in force. Guess they haven't been able to hunt for a few days.
