Wow! Im impressed! I had major dust above the focusing screen from trying to blow air out with air pressure (will never do that again). Im talking about hundreds of micro specs of dust that I could see in the viewfinder. Then I had spots all over my photos from the dirty sensor after my cruise trip. I bought my 5D back in Oct. 19th and just sent it in for a cleaning. Low and behold they emailed me today and said that my cleaning was FREE!!! What service!!! I was expecting to pay at least $100+! Just thought I'd share with everyone incase you needed a cleaning too! :D

From all I've seen, Canon provides sensor cleaning as a warranty item for the first year..

I once got a little to zealous with blowing off the focus screen on my 10D and wound up with a couple of specks above the glass.. They're really hard to get out then :)

Glad to hear you got good service :)

Well, if they provide sensor cleaning free of charge for the first year, they must have forgotten that when I sent in my camera. I got charged $47 for a cleaning that I had to resend the camera back in to ultimately have the cmos sensor replaced.

Congrats on having a good encounter Richard!

Thanks Tony! Maybe you should call them and see if you can get a refund! :D Lots to gain and nothing to lose!

Aren't these bad for the camera?

Edit: Sorry I reread your post and reliezed you did know (afterwards) that it was a bad idea.

What is the best way to clean a camera? I heard alot of good things about the "rocket blowers" I think there called. Any one here use these?

I actually used my rocket blower to try to blow out the dust above the viewfinder, but it wasn't powerful enough, so I used compressed canned air. lol. It wasn't like right next to the focusing screen so I'd thought it would be okay. Plus, I wasn't spraying the mirror or the sensor. But it made the dust situation 100x worse. lol.

I have used the Giotto Blower on my 20D and it has worked quite good. However, a couple of times I did have to use the Sensor Swabs and the Eclipse optic cleaning solution, which worked like a charm.

It scares me to think I may have to be doing that someday. My protection agreement covers cleanings but I'm not sure if I trust Best Buy employees to clean my camera. So I plan on looking further into who does the cleaning, because I'd much rather do it my self.

I got a set of the overly expensive "sensor brushes" and am very happy with them. I wish they where cheaper though.

I've got the same problem with you..lots of dust above the focusing screen from trying to blow air out with air pressure.. Canon should have some warnings about this on their manual.. ;)

Did you have any dust on mirror? A canon tech guy told me that any dust will affect focus. Canon techs are great. Every time I have called with questions, they were very professional and gave me great service.

I believe it only covers one free clean under Canon warranty, accompanied with purchase receipt.

Ripjaw:

A friend just took his 300D back to Best Buy under the service agreement and they don't touch it. They sent it to an "Authorized Canon Repair" place.
