If the finger test on a distant object is indecisive, try it on something a bit nearer, one where your eyes are more convergent.

I'm so strongly left eye dominant it's not funny. I can hold the camera to my right eye, and with my left eye closed see through the viewfinder with my right eye. If I then open my left eye and use them both, the view from my right eye through the viewfinder literally disappears! I flat out cannot see it anymore.

If I do the opposite, I can use my right eye to track action while looking through the viewfinder with my left, but this only works with the camera in a few limited positions.

I'm kind of the same with my right-handedness in that my left hand is only good for holding stuff while I work on it with my right hand.

When doing the finger test for eye dominance, line your finger up on a distant object but then it is important that you focus on your finger. When you close your non-dominant eye the finger should be relatively centered on the distant object but when you close your dominant eye you finger should appear to move to the side of the distant object and will move in the direction of the dominant eye. Again it is important that you focus on your finger and not on the distant object otherwise your finger will appear to move to each side of the object.

Right handed and left eye user. I was also goofy footed when I use to skate.

Also, use your other hand to cover your eyes, rather than trying to close them. You can move your hand quicker from eye to eye to be sure you're not letting your target drift.

I too am right handed and left eye dominant. It's slightly incovenient for photography, but not too bad. W

Me too. And because i use my left eye for the viewfinder my nose just gets in the way and i tend to turn my head slightly to the right. It's probably is the main reason must of my shots are tilted. And if i press the ISO button on my 1100D i end up almost picking my nose with my thumb. But i agree, it's not too bad. :D

The finger test doesn't work for me... if I focus on my finger, then the object in the background is doubled. If I line my finger up with the one on the right, my right eye lines up. If I line my finger up with the one on the left, my left eye lines up.

I must be weird or something???

I am right handed
I shoot a gun using my right eye as my dominant eye
I shoot a Canon  with my Left eye

I did the test and my right eye is the Dominant one

When I am using my camera with my left eye (non dominant eye) it just feels more comfortable and I always have my right eye open so I am always aware of my surroundings while I am shooting.

What does this all mean? Oh who cares! Whatever works LOL!!!

I'm right handed and left eye dominant and its never been an issue for me. I got my first slr when I was 12 I put it to my left eye naturally and never thought about it, never knew it wasn't normal. I take my portrait shots just like a right eyed person shutter button on top. I tend to close my right eye when taking photos. also fire a gun with my left eye but keep both eyes open.

It took me all week to get around to checking which eye I use. It's apparently so natural, I could not remember.I also discovered in the military that I'm left eyed dominant and right handed.I always wondered why I sighted across shot guns as a kid. I should have learned how to shoot left handed. Now I only hunt with a camera and I've always used my left eye to the viewfinder. It apparently just came naturally.

Here is an eye dominance test that works better for me than the finger one.

so what does it all mean? being right-handed and left eye dominant.

I shoot with left eye to the viewfinder and I'm right handed, I just find it awkward putting my right eye to the viewfinder, it just doesn't feel right.

According to wikipedia (external link), "the dominant eye is the one that is primarily relied on for precise positional information. This may be especially important in sports which require aim, such as archery, darts or shooting sports.".

I don't know if it would really affect photographic ability. We're not really shooting projectiles like arrows or bullets. At least that's how I think of it.

If you use the LCD screen, both eyes work for you. Does the viewfinder have any advantage over the screen besides draining the battery less? I don't find that the view through a tiny window helps at all. It doesn't show the focus or the effect of settings.
